Audience is almost all middle aged White women and couples in their 50s/60s. And a pinch of soy Millennial for flavor.
Most of that audience probably watched The Simpsons as kids and teens, back when it was in its prime; and now this is the shit that makes them laugh. How embarrassing.
Honestly it almost looks like it could BE a scene from the (first 8 seasons of the) Simpsons. Like at any moment, we could cut to a shot of Homer on the couch, staring at the TV and looking confused and vaguely afraid, Bart saying "Laaaaame", and Lisa, who had just been trying to tell them about how important it was for everyone to get vaccinated, sighing and cringing as she is embarassed and undermined by the awful attempts of the media.
I was also thinking of the propaganda show in V for Vendetta.
Everyone watching from home, captivated, hypnotically laughing at the jokes they are supposed to laugh at. Then utterly shocked when the script got flipped and mocked der leader.
If Colbert has a secret room in his house it's not there as a museum of subversive art.

That was the first thing that came to mind. It looks like something out of a "not so distant future" dystopian movie. Something to quickly and easily demonstrate how incredibly goddamn dumb and docile the population has gotten.
