there are animal cruelty laws that are retarded, because they're based on anthropomorphizing the animal. like the restrictions on force feeding ducks, for example. or based on profound misanthropy where you dont want animal testing, because you're happy and even enthusiastic about human suffering.
prohibition of battery farmed chicken isnt one of those. battery farmed chicken tastes like shit, and is cruel to the animal. its something only line-go-up corpos are happy with, because it generates tons of slop that is "technically chicken"
None of them are ever removed.
elected parliamentary bodies get away with it because of an appearance of collegiality. no single one is responsible, and its understood that if one of them were to vote against the grain, he will get replaced by a "correctly-voting person" in no time.
it sort of protects all of them against angry people with a minimum of principles.
Reality is, no one but the worst spergs actually wants a civil war. we all have friends, loved ones, family, and when bullets start flying alot of them will die. especially if one were to take an active role. so everyone instinctively tries to keep his head down and hope someone else makes it blow over
When the thing actually goes off, its going to have a terrifying threshold effect.
early millenial here. sort of grew up in the worldview of "a society grows as long as men plant trees in whose shade they'll never sit". on my own - parents always busy, dumped me at grandma's any chance they had. even had her relocate to "be closer to the grandkids". thought they were planting those trees lol.
only now that i have kids of my own I realized the cavalry wasnt coming. took me a while.
the damage boomers have done to our social fabric is immeasurable. everyone on my parents' gen x cohort sort of "went along with the times" thinking the parents knew best, and now its up to millennials and Zs to clean up the mess...
Stop looking for Cartesian rigor where there is none by design.
Look, I'm not pro or against the guy. I'm not American, so all I want from you guys is for you to keep me out of your blast radius.
But I think the following point isnt made often enough.
Trump has in common with the leftists that he doesnt use political speech to communicate "facts an logic"^tm. He is part of that group of people that use discourse to communicate emotion and political alignment. He says whatever fits the emotional line he wants to push at the moment. it doesnt matter that what he says makes no sense to anyone who pays attention. if anything, if it annoys his opponents by being offensively incoherent, thats a feature, not a bug.
which is why he pulled along alot of former working class lefties. being an old school democrat, he knows how the sausage is made.
to the Cartesian minded, think of some piece of music without lyrics. you may like it, you may not, but asking whether it is true or not makes no sense. truth is not the point.
He is what you got at the moment, so work with it.
Not American, so i must be missing something. It feels very weird watching all the news of federal employees queueing up at food banks after missing a month's pay. isnt this something that everyone knew is highly likely to happen, given the political context, months in advance? Even disregarding the general recommendations of always having a couple months' worth of expenses in a savings account, what happened to just planning ahead for a very expected disruption in income?
the r/europe thread about this is so funny. now that it puts their IT slacker jobs at risk, suddenly borders and sovereignty matter lol
