I don't know much of the history that far back. Carmack certainly made the most advancements in bringing 3D to gaming and to this day many things are based on his principles but expanded.

Vista and 7 both are beautiful with Aero Glass. 7 was just and update to Vista really, added DirectX 11 and bugfixes. XP was great too. A little cartoony compared to 7 but much better looking than 8-11.
Yea I used 8 at school and hated it. It was built for touch screens not mouse and keyboard, and that nonsense persists thru 11. It takes more clicks to get to things, that's just objectively worse. Not to mention the ugly brutalist look vs 7s sleek and beautiful Aero Glass.
I haven't paid for Windows since 7. 8,8.1 I totally skipped, and they finally handed out 10 for free because nobody wanted it either. And 11 is just a crappy facelift of 10 like 10 was of 8.1 and 8.1 was of 8. Dogshit. Win7 was the greatest OS ever made, but no, they keep releasing more 8 based garbage.

AAA deserve their fate at this point. The only survivors I predict are CryTek, IdTech, Obsidian, and a few others I can't name off the top of my head. Ironically you could probably argue those are AA studios compared to the other budgets we see nowadays.

We had it but I would guess less than 20% of the town had it till about 06-08. Mind you, rural town of 720 people. Ironically a few years after most people finally had DSL, we were picked as a testbed for fiber optic a few years before all the surrounding larger towns got it. Small town is easier for testing purposes.
