I wouldn't be surprised with how much the current Japanese government is focusing on anti censorship and protecting cultural assests LIKE Anime that they just fine the living hell out of Crunchyroll till it becomes too much of an issue that Sony HAS to act.
And with everything they've done with personal data to censorship of art, there's A LOT to fine and sue for.

That's just because of licensing. Japanese companies don't want to bother with the rest of the world or don't have the market reach. So they license their anime to crunchyroll but exclude Japan because they've already got that market covered and don't want extra competition.
That makes sense. Japan being walled off from the horrors that are being wrought upon their works is just sort of a serendipitous side effect of a sensible business decision.
That doesn't explain why Sony, which owns Crunchyroll, would put themselves through the trouble of injecting subversive BS into all their licensed shows. Why not just air them as they are and let the quality speak for itself?

I don't hold it against them because we have to consider that they did not grow up in our era of the digital wild west, where the internet had no restrictions, the average indie programmer knew how to code to the metal, and warez sites were how we used to pirate software.

Crunchyroll is such a faggot platform, and it was from day one. The issue is the idiots who don't sail the high seas are the ones who pay for this shit, and they're too stupid and lazy to care about things like subversion even when it's against their self-interest.
My biggest beef with Crunchyroll is just how thoroughly it has gutted the fansubbing scene. It used to be any given series had at least two or three groups subbing it as it was coming out, which gave you a good spread both for quality of sub presentation as well as translation quality. If someone was being retarded on the level of "jelly donuts", you could just swap over to a less retarded subber and move on with your day. Now those groups are all dead and the new game in town is to just copy/paste CrunchyRoll's subs and tinker with the "encoding" to try to shrink the file size a little bit. Yay? I'd rather have gargantuan file sizes with good subs.
Kill CrunchRoll. Bring back fansubs.
It's the same garbage with mangas. Most of the good scanlation groups are dead. The only people remaining are those trying to monetize their work with "timed exclusivity" behind a paywall or those who do machine translation without any kind of proofreading. The number of times I've seen the wrong gendered pronouns on characters is mind boggling.

is there any legit way to watch the shows that Crunchyroll licenses that actually supports the publishers/studios? I know there are other legit streamers like hidive but they have a different catalog. the pirate sites also seem to just be ripping from crunchyroll and fansubbing is basically dead.

I absolutely loath anime as an adult. It's the insufferable sound. The whiney, shreaking sound of the voice actors. I had a friend force me to watch demon slayer and I had to watch it on mute. It's my understanding that all anime is like this.
Dubs or Subs?
I always start with dubs, then switch to sub's, but it doesn't matter. It's on mute with subtitles from the introduction of the first female character. I don't get the point of that annoying crying baby voice, its awful.
I remember watching Bleach all the way up until the one character, Nell I think, was introduced.

and EN Dubs use some British Foid VO which is like the worst kind of English you can imagine (they sound obese)
though it depends, some companies use American VO which sounds MUCH better than British and it is actually passable
overall i don't like tranime because the plot is some chav-childish nonsense and its not at all realistic
like realistic animes are extremely fucking rare, almost a myth
most tranimes always contain concepts of a fighting foid (which is better than men) if not outright fantasy themes that make no sense
frankly speaking aside from Berserk and Goblin slayer its all High-fantasy grab with too much emphasis on fanservice and not at all on story (and even the latter is full of what i just said)
I saw the 90s Berserk series and it was gay. Like, the main leader was gay, there were gay scenes, the female character was a soldier and it was depicted as totally normal. But I didn't really mind, I liked Kaske a lot, and the plot was really deep, realistic and political. Until the ending with the demons, that was painful to watch. The show would've been much better without the demons.

Usually the English dubs are less annoying than the japanese actors, but they are always both to the point of of me wanting to stop watching, skip pass scenes, or mute it.
