Not to the extent of not being able to use the toilet but definitely reading and calculation skills have degraded a lot.
Yep, I was never taught how to tie my shoes until like 5th grade in school (10 years old). My parents also neglected to teach me how to properly wipe after using the toilet so I wasted a lot of toilet paper.
Parents are used to letting schools do everything so they don't have to actually teach their children.

SO many younger generations now DON'T know how to tie a tie! It's either clip ons or no tie at all! I was taught how to tie my shoelaces when I was 5 (at least I remember doing it around then, my mother forced me to learn to my great disinterest at the time) and then learning to tie a tie around when I was 8. So many parents I feel check out of just teaching the basics going 'eh they'll learn it off school/YouTube'.
No wonder I've heard so many of these 'dad' YouTube channels popping up teaching the basics because their parents don't put in the effort! (Rant over)

I already know, I observed it in action, in person, in my collegiate English classes.
I could kick out a 3 page paper in 15 minutes, and pretty much the rest of the class would take days.
I'd say that roughly half the current college student population should not be there, they are not smart enough. This won't change, though, not as long as employers are forced to use a college degree as a proxy for an intelligence test, which Griggs vs Duke Power made such a liability that no employer uses them anymore.

I remember that in mine. First year and I’d gone to cheap community college for transfer credit. They have us proofread each others papers, which is stupid in its own right, but the paper I’m handed, what the hell. I could have marked 100 extremely basic level grammatical and spelling errors.
I learned very quickly in that class just write all my papers the night before in an hour and that was all the effort they ever got. I was there to get a course credit for a paper credential, not to learn.

12 years ago I was in my junior year of college and I had a guy who could only read at a fourth grade level be selected to read something aloud in our class.
That was certainly a moment.
I thought they were all astronauts, doctors and engineers.
Corpo electrical jobs are cushy, you get to work in high-rises and contruction, big long contracts that take forever to do, but you're going to get the dregs and hangers-on. Going indie can be very hard, you gotta set up your own advertising, your own website, google optimizations, etc, but you'll never be saddled with deadweight.

If any kind of market forces actually existed, the future would be ripe for the picking. Just put at least part-time effort into your kids and they would have their choice of job, spouse, neighborhood, if they were only competing against their peers.

What are the hard rules that govern your child's classroom? What behavious is expected and how is it enforced? What is the grading criteria and how would a student go about disputing their marks?
The answer to all of these questions is: "whatever the individual teacher feels like that day".
I think the biggest outcome of Covid is not screen usage or permissive parenting, it's that parents saw their kids miss months of school and saw no noticeable decline in either educational progress or behaviour so they now know that the schools were doing nothing of value for their kids.
How many school age kids do you know and are also able to assess their educational progress?

It seems to me that the bigger scandal, more important than the proliferation of screens, is that schools have little or no effect on educational outcomes for students; those who learn at home are educated, those who don't, aren't. The same goes for disciine, "basic skills", and civic mindedness.
Which begs the question: why are we paying taxes towards a public education system that doesn't educate? Why not give that money directly to parents?

There are entire primary schools where all the ( non-White ) children "graduate" without being able to read or count.
