Yeah I don't understand why these guys do this at all. It's so bizarre to me. I agree that they never went particularly hard against leftist politicians, but they did strike a good middle ground, in their heyday. There seemed to be a bit of a decline after season 16 or so, though. There were still the occasional time they struck gold, but basically nothing they've made in season 20 or afterwards felt like it hit the mark. It was obvious that Trump winning the first time really shocked them, and they never seemed to quite recover.

I heard a small part of Burr's defense re: accepting Saudi money to go to their comedy festival. It was from a podcast.
He claims that on the flight there, he was expecting to step off the plane and immediately get surrounded by a bloodthirsty mob of angry Saudis because he's American and, "that's what been we've taught to think about what Saudi Arabia is like."
I also heard a summary of his comments from someone else and the cliff notes version is, "I found out that Saudis are basically just like us. They have normal conversations with their friends and yeah some bad things have happened but overall they're just regular people like you and me."
He's obviously lying about the first part. If he had any serious concerns about getting surrounded by a bloodthirsty mob, he wouldn't have gone.

Its been a literal constant gag from every "big" comedian since like 2005 that they were scared to do a show in Saudi, got offered an absurd amount of money to do so, and then got there and found them "totally normal, great people." Back then it was part of attacking Bush and the war by painting Muslims as good people, and its continued to be used as such.
I think the most famous example of this was Gabriel Iglesias getting there and finding out they apparently loved Jeff Dunham's Achmed.
If I can go on a short rant, all feelings on both of them aside, was a real bro move from him. It was at the peak of his "fucking everywhere" career, and Dunham had been getting railed for being overexposed by Comedy Central and being "racist" because of puppets like Achmed and Jose. Everyone in the comedy scene was trying to cancel him (likely out of hate for how rich he was getting), and it basically defanged a lot of that by revealing how much the people he was being "racist against" found it hilarious and loved it.

When I was big in the music scene and went to a couple concerts a week women would flood shows once a band got a single with nationwide play.
