The problem is that most modern games have a good foundation.......and that's it, its just foundations. Western games are like spending years putting down foundations for a giant structure and then putting tents on it.
There's no story, no character, no grand game design that makes you want to play more, it's all so shallow that the games of a decade ago still are the most played compared to modern games. GTA 5 and CS GO wipes the floor with EVERY modern game combined.
Empyrion is a fantastic example of this too. 99% of the game for however many years has JUST been foundation and ship construction mechanics.
It's to the point to where modders had to essentially do all the work of actually creating a solid story, campaign, and galactic setup in a thing called Reforged Eden.
And even then, it's still only half a game with a piddling of a story (beyond the sandbox-survival-build-grind).
I've been a capital G Gamer for longer than most of you have been alive, and I rarely buy games any more. They're all just so bland and corporate. The only things I really care any more are Nintendo flagships and the odd out-of-the-blue GotY contender.
My parents always told me one day I'd stop caring about getting new video games. I doubt this is what they meant though.
In the same boat here. I used to love games, going all the way back to the Atari, and early indie titles like Sopwith and Street Rod. Lived through the DOS days and having to manually setup system files through the config.sys to initialise memory settings for the boot sequencing, or launching from floppy disks because some computers back in the day didn't come with hard drives.
Never thought there would come a time where the past time I've loved the most is something I can hardly be bothered with these days. It now feels like a chore thinking about gaming because everything has turned woke, lame, and gay.
Recently watched a normie review Alan Wake 2 and it's funny how he completely tore the game apart for all the problems that Lethn pointed out in the initial post -- exact same criticisms. And it's true, they're so banal and vapid that they're just wastes of time, not even worth hate-watching/playing.
A little intelligence gathering or market research into what woke-slop is being made is one thing, but hate-watching or hate-playing sounds like a totally self-punishing waste of time to me.
I wouldn't call that hate-watching so much as distraction-watching, out of desperate necessity.
When I was a kid and always getting awful colds there was barely anything to watch for a good majority of the day. It was a little sad how excited I'd almost get over any show coming on that was at least a tiny bit entertaining (with minimum cringe).
I was desperately ill, and my sister who was obsessed with it had to go to school. SO my Mom took me to Blockbuster to rent Titantic on 2 VHS (in the morning, before everyone else got to this New Release). I fell asleep before the first one was over, though. At that point the ship had already started sinking. It was pretty gay!
Well, like I said, I wanted everyone else to pre-order. Otherwise, I don't usually. Also, the special edition includes a spaceship, so I didn't really pre- order a game; I pre-ordered a spaceship.
I found out it does include a Steam key. IDK if they are going to deliver electronically or if I have to wait for the box to get here.
I was really proud of myself when I unlocked the WH40: Chaos Gate pre order bonus without paying
I still play TF2. Just a few nights ago I was laughing my ass off in a 64-player 2Fort community server because on top of the chaos of 60 players fighting each other, there were four people on all-talk arguing over whether Five Nights At Freddys was a good movie.
Wait, you mean you weren't sold by the gay vampire fucking a bear during the big reveal trailer? And all your friends telling you how awesome it was while the media was "totally seething bro"?
Next you'll tell me people just talk a big game about principles until they might have to skip a good game.
I found a few retro stores nearby where they sell some older games, and I've been enjoying things from the PS1 and PS2 era again. It's actually impressive that the games graphics have improved, at the cost of just about everything else.
I found a few games under 10 dollars that were pretty decent. Not insanely great, but they had this charm that made me want to continue playing. I can't say that about any recent AAA release since, well 2018 or 2019. Somewhere around there.
I get that one of the issues is that I've been gaming for a very long time, and that means I've seen a lot of new games in older ones, where they've clearly been inspired by, or outright borrowed directly from, and I start to think "Okay, so they want 90 CAD, and the only new thing they can show an old fart like me is this one thing? Nah. Pass."
It's good. A little easier than I'd have liked. Even the special world stages only took me a few tries after figuring out the gimmicks. Beat Bowser on my 2nd try I think.
Without putting a whole lot of effort in, I have like 2 or 3 seeds left to find. Still entertaining though, and I've 100%'d every console Super Mario game, so I have to keep the streak going.
Its 2D Mario with a lot of inspiration and creativity stuck with the problem that its still 2D Mario and they cannot do anything else interesting with that framework.
Whether that's amazing or disappointing comes down to how much you enjoy 2D Mario.
gameplay has been largely standardised. beyond the walking simulator, the only difference are the combat mechanics by a SMALL margin. Everything else is identical - light RPG progression, side quest design, gear system, chapter-based story progression
story wise all follows the same "hero's journey" 3-part arcs and story beats in shameless lazy/low effort ways
music either standardised to completely cinematic orchestral pieces or super electronic music. or both like in ff16
cinematics too also standardised. mostly same camera angles and shots all the time when in dialogue, or exposition
It's what people find interesting/entertaining/aspirational.
A lot of people are inspired by culture -- many of our technological advancements in modern society have sprung from cultural inspiration, either from literature, stories, plays, or sports. Oftentimes because the imagination is sparked from enthusiasm for societal engagement.
Despite people's criticisms of him, Elon Musk is one of the only few people trying to force humans to move forward technologically (he's still a midwit in many regards), and a lot of his push comes from being inspired by playing video games (as they are his favourite past time).
I would be curious to know, who else of Elon's stature is trying to pave a foray into space colonisation? And who, among his peers, are aspiring to do anything as forward-thinking?
That is the original purpose of this board. Well, bitching about the media portrayal of gaming, but the meta-level allows for lower-level discourse as well.
If you go to video game subs to call people who play video games losers on the internet you’re probably an insecure unhappy failure that needs to put others down to feel better about themselves.
literally anything at all can be dismissed as childish and anyone who engages in that should grow up. if you are truly grown up by that logic, the only acceptable things you should be doing are eating sleeping and killing yourself.
art is part of culture. without it we are no better than animals and won't progress. videogames are just the latest medium in culture. just unfortunate that Jews have successfully subverted it and perverting it like they have everything else

Same. Prices are higher for everything too.

I barely understand "hate" watching movies or TV shows, and I'd understand hate-playing games even less.
A little intelligence gathering or market research into what woke-slop is being made is one thing, but hate-watching or hate-playing sounds like a totally self-punishing waste of time to me.
I didn't understand it until I watched Teen Moms 2.
Ok I was very ill, otherwise ain't nobody got time fo dat.
I wouldn't call that hate-watching so much as distraction-watching, out of desperate necessity.

That was how I saw the first half of Titantic.
I was desperately ill, and my sister who was obsessed with it had to go to school. It’s not worth hate doing anything and never fucking was. It’s not mentally healthy to seek out activity that makes you angry.
Nethack is forever
Homeworld 3 comes out soon.
Yeah, and I'm nervous about what they're going to have done to it.
You'd think there's only so much you can screw up a giant spaceship game, wouldn't you?
The new roguelike mode sounds interesting.
I have money in on homeworld being dope. In a way, you guys are my paypigs. Although I also paid 120 for the special edition. Or whatever it was.
Actually, how does this work? Do I have to wait for amazon to deliver this shit? Do I get like a key?
I have no idea. My main rule with games is:
No RussiannopeNo women, no kidsummNo pre-orders...
Well, like I said, I wanted everyone else to pre-order. Otherwise, I don't usually. Also, the special edition includes a spaceship, so I didn't really pre- order a game; I pre-ordered a spaceship.

... you play modern games?
Goes back to SimCity 4 and Transport Tycoon Deluxe
OpenTTD FTW...
I still play TF2. Just a few nights ago I was laughing my ass off in a 64-player 2Fort community server because on top of the chaos of 60 players fighting each other, there were four people on all-talk arguing over whether Five Nights At Freddys was a good movie.
I still go back and play Payload mode in TF2. Pure fun and frustration, but the good kind.
The only aaa game i played this year was armored core 6. And I did not fell for the psy op that is bg3 like you dolts did. I still have standards
But yeah i only buy japanese games now
Wait, you mean you weren't sold by the gay vampire fucking a bear during the big reveal trailer? And all your friends telling you how awesome it was while the media was "totally seething bro"?

I'm going to play Mario: Wonder and let you know how it goes.
It's good. A little easier than I'd have liked. Even the special world stages only took me a few tries after figuring out the gimmicks. Beat Bowser on my 2nd try I think.

Well... I haven't played 2D Mario in about 15 years... so I guess I'll find out.
ignoring all the woke shit you can add:
gameplay has been largely standardised. beyond the walking simulator, the only difference are the combat mechanics by a SMALL margin. Everything else is identical - light RPG progression, side quest design, gear system, chapter-based story progression

Did BG3, like, come out? I'm waiting for Homeworld 3, still, too.
Stop playing video games the whole hobby is degenerates
No go do something useful
These commenters never see the irony.
Nope, this sub and the gaming one just incessantly bitch about gaming but still do it. It's like an abused spouse

Try finding a nice Christian board.
This is true but we all have our sins
Your grammar is degenerates.
Not wrong, but you’re in the wrong place.
Don't care forums are for discussion. Gamers need to grow up, if you are over age 16 and still gaming you are probably a loser
If you go to video game subs to call people who play video games losers on the internet you’re probably an insecure unhappy failure that needs to put others down to feel better about themselves.
Nah I just hope to reach one person here with a brain
do you watch movies?
do you read fiction books?
do you watch TV?
do you listen to any music at all?
do you paint?
do you sculpt?
do you build anything as a hobby?
literally anything at all can be dismissed as childish and anyone who engages in that should grow up. if you are truly grown up by that logic, the only acceptable things you should be doing are eating sleeping and killing yourself.

Gaming's on a different level of retarded man baby than those
