Only the genius' on hackernews could find such convoluted ways to justify not releasing the waters in Maui for 'equity' reasons (news.ycombinator.com)

I love the argument that he "shouldn't have used the siren because it would confuse people."

It was the middle of the night and a fire was approaching. Sending out mass texts is NOT a workable solution to wake people up. A giant fucking siren is.

Nobody is going to start running towards a big wall of flames and smoke because they hear the siren that tells them to run uphill. Waking everyone up was the number one priority.

Liberal eutopia, where death is preferred over confusion.

They'll never have to suffer again, see?

Yeah and put both of them together, sound the sirens to wake people up and send the mass text so they know what's going on.

Sometimes it takes fuckups like this to learn of system flaws. Hopefully now they'll add a generic "wake people up" alarm to the library.

I take the batteries out of my smoke alarm to ensure I never get woken up by someone as trivial as a fire.

Only reasonable thing to do once it starts chirpin

I guess, generously, they figured the giant wall of flame would wake people up. Perhaps it moved faster than expected.

Honestly, other than firefighters, I've scarcely heard of people having to run from fire.

Anyways, just honesty and speculation; don't get mad at me.

About half the residents don't have phones. The siren is often just that.

It is designed to stop things like Chernobyl

LOL.

All your homes were burned to the ground but, don't worry, at least we didn't have a Chernobyl nuclear accident on your island that lacks a nuclear reactor!

Be thankful, bigots, because you can still sell your land to Blackrock!

Don't worry, Biden is giving them a lump sum of 70,000 US Cents!

Spend it quick! $700 will only buy a gallon of milk at the end of his presidency

As long as it's on fire. Just to make it 'equitable'.

Native Hawaiian cultural practitioner and DLNR’s deputy director for water resource management

"We need the water to fight this bigass fire". "But that might delay the sugarcane harvest by a day" says the idiot.

"People are in their homes we need to use the siren designated for wildfires so they know a bigass fire is coming". "But what if they run into the fire" says the idiot.

These idiots made very stupid decisions, they should be shamed, they should feel terrible about themselves, and if they end up falling on their own sword like they would in some better cultures than ours that's a good thing.

This is what you can't say on HN.

I don't know the IQ of your average islander but I do know there isn't a single animal on Earth that runs towards a fire. Do the officials really have that little respect for Hawaiians?

Having spent a decent amount of time there I can confirm the stupidity of what occurred is not shocking in the least. Something in the water there impacts decision making.

Fact of the matter, these people are a part of the human extinction cult. They would rather have Earth devoid of human life than trying to make Earth livable for human life.
