You have the free time to constantly complain about your life in comparison to others on a reddit spinoff, you live in a first-world country, you're employed, and you almost certainly have access to food, water and shelter, and an internet connection.
The vast majority of the world's population is worse off than you, being on the bottom (or low) rung of a first world country is leagues apart from the same in other countries.
You yourself said you met these people on a plane flight. You have the means to travel through one of the most expensive methods of transportation available to the average person.
Honestly, for "basics", you're probably fine. I don't see you surviving off things like low-cost carbs like salted pasta or bread or anything, which I have heard from other people in desperate straits.
I don't think I'm underestimating your life, I'm sure its very hard, but I also think you're using your life's lowly state as an excuse to stay in that position forever.
Hell, you probably look at your own life as hopeless based on what I'm hearing here. Life will probably continue to suck for you for at least some time, but what happens after that depends significantly on what you do.
If you're living paycheck to paycheck (or contract to contract), maybe its time to find a more stable job and/or increase your own value and skillset. There are plenty of online and community college certifications and skills you can pick up that would allow you to take on different kinds of work, and they're dirt-cheap or free in a lot of cases.
If the area is so bad in terms of rent prices, then maybe you need to find a different place to live.
There are also ways to cut expenses that are available to pretty much every person that would allow you to save more money each month, and if the job's money isn't enough and you want to stay in the area, get a second job. When I was working retail, I knew a lot of people who were working 2 jobs because obviously retail isn't enough on its own to survive and support their families.
Things won't change for you unless you decide to impose your own will on both yourself and the environment you're in, and if the environment you're in isn't suitable for that, you need to find another one.

If I don't get a raise within the first year working somewhere, I move on. If OP is contract, it sounds like he should be spreading a wider net and/or increasing his rates; it's easy to fall into the trap of undervalueing yourself, especially when self-employed.
OP, how crazy would it be if you should actually be doing well right now but aren't because you aren't charging what you're worth? Because you undervalue yourself (as reflected in your posts)? It could literally be that simple.
Focus on being debt free rather than rich, that's a much more achievable goal if you aren't marketing savvy or a lunatic. If we're talking finances, that's been my goal this whole time, it's why I didn't go to university, I looked at the student debt situation and the quality of 'education' being provided and noped the fuck out of there.
Learning to cook as well, you'd be surprised how much money you save. I ordered dominoes once on new years eve to treat myself and honestly even though it was okay compared to the food I cook for myself on the regular I felt like I was robbed. Learn about long term food storage and get really autistic and you'd be surprised at how much you can live off for a month, bonus points if you learn butchering skills because it's cheaper to buy in bulk. Then you can just freeze your meat and eat relatively well for that whole time, again, if you know how to cook.
I realise that may all seem pointless, but I promise it isn't, I'm amazed at how much money people piss away on shit without even realising. The worse ones though are the ones who know and just keep digging themselves into a hole. Also give up on living in the city especially if you're young, they're all turning into massive shitholes and overpriced shitholes at that. When you research real estate go for the suburbs and countryside instead.
Edit: Also as we all fucking know, realistically women in this current society have a major advantage than everybody else, especially if they're attractive in any way. Guaranteed that the majority of clicks she's getting are probably from thirsty simps if she doesn't actually produce content of any real value. But seriously, if you get your self-talk right everything improves a lot. It takes practice to become aware of the running commentary your brain is making. Recognizing how you talk to yourself and taking steps to make it more appropriate (kinder) is 3/4 of the battle.
For example, you want to change Wwow, I got nothing done today" into "So I have cleared some roadblocks. Tomorrow is a new day and I am going to hit my task list again."
You really have to watch comparing yourself to other people. Everyone is better at something than you, and they all lie about how well they are doing. No one is going to tell you that they have a tiny dick and their wife is leaving them, especially if it is true.

When comparing, don't fixate just on the obvious and superficial. Are people aware of their surroundings, do they form meaningful relationships, have they accomplished anything before a mid-life crisis, and so on?
Doing the above has made me realize that the societal structure is fairly immutable, but that there's a whole bunch of luck of who lands where. Now bust your ass for the next decade, and get the hell out of your hometown or country. You might not wind up in a great place, but barring freak circumstances you'll wind up in a better situation than this specific trust-fund dolt.
