“Primarily affects minority sexes".
How considerate of them to think about men. The minority sex.
TIL the Sun is a misogynist
This has to be someone on a government grift right? Some construction company must be getting favours.
The grift is also that the women who designed it went on government-paid trips to Ecuador and Europe to "learn about street shading solutions".
The grift must extend well beyond that. They spent 60 million on these things. Even if they weren't completely useless they'd have a hard time justifying more than 10 million of that. If the city had any sense, which of course they don't, they'd pay for a forensic accountant to see what happened.
Edit: A lot of articles say $200,000 total cost but I can't find a good source on that. If this is just a pilot with a few shades that's much easier to run through.
It is $6000 x 10,000 for total costs to produce them, so that's $60 million right there.
That doesn't take into account the cost of research, flying the fat pigs around the world, paying their salaries for years, cost of installation, cost of removing old units.
I'd guess about $100 million was spent on this project, probably more.
Apparently a lot of the cost is to get around various zoning regulations and to keep from needing approvals from other city departments (eg. supposedly the thing must be completely attached to the pole because if it touched the sidewalk they would need approvals from the department in charge of sidewalk maintenance).
Which objectively speaking makes it even more absurd, but in a certain perverse way makes sense.
Are you telling me too much government is bad? You don't say.
Ah, well that explains it.
Look at what a normal one costs in effort and dollars. This is a company offering to do it for 1/5th the price and a fraction of the space, likely meaning less departments involved.
In a way this isn't the grift. Its band-aiding a previous grift with a lot of buzzwords to dodge that fact.
This is the reason you never want to much government. Everything they do is like this.
A shopping mall would install shade for 1500 bucks. Maybe it's more than that. Anyways, I know a guy that sells it if you want some.
And a carpenter could make a shade that does the same function for like 400$ and the lumber with his electrician buddy coming along to set up the light.
It's just so stupid from so many angles that it's hard to know where to start.
Like it doesn't work from literally any angle except high noon.
Is there anything so worthless that liberals won't steal your money to pay for it if it includes the words "women and minorities?"
That hits on so many levels it actually hurt a little.
Feminist engineering in action. Just waiting for one to topple over and injure someone.
I'm just waiting for it to actively facilitate a rape- the one thing it's supposedly designed to discourage.
Only women and minorities need shade and lighting apparently???
That pole cost as much as a two car garage. A simple open-front shed design with perforated sides would have done the job better for cheaper.
We used to have these old bus shelters that were made of a diamond shaped mesh that was double sided and offset from each other so that it would shade and let the breeze through.
It really sucked in the winter though, but as soon as they installed glass bus shelters they would regularly get vandalised.
The old ones stood for 30 years with no maintenance cost...
Democrats win because they make sure their people get paid with fake projects like this, while our guys make boring, pointless speeches about deficit reduction and fiscal responsibility.
To top it off, their lead picture shows a woman sitting on the traditional bench

Cool. That leaves the benches free for all kinds of "Man-Spreading" leisure time. If any wahman complain just point them towards their shade pole.
Your shade has holes in it. It's too narrow to really give any shade except for certain hours.
It gives as much shade as a pergola the rest of the time. A pergola would have been cheaper too. It cost around 12,000 dollars to make and install one of these. Or about 3k for a pergola of similar dimensions with a tarp.
I guess in places where a regular sized bus stop with bench wouldn't fit, this was their choice.
It was a dumb one though.
We can't have normal bus shelters because they will be occupied by bums. So instead of dealing with the bums we have to engineer anti-bum solutions while pretending they aren't anti-bum.
The correct solution is to use force against bums and keep them from making normal people's life worse. The "compassionate" (marxist) solution is to make life worse for everyone because that is more "equitable".
Be fair, a lot of people had life-changing vacations because of this. And think of all the bribes that had to be payed, there's a lot of people that got a lot of money out of this scheme.
Just not the people they claim to help with this bs.
Fits 2 minorities or one of the lady in blue in the article.
It's basically like modern art. You have to be "enlightened" to understand and appreciate it like they supposedly do.
I think that's a picture of the press conference which to my great disappointment I cannot find online. Presumably those are the women responsible and they are looking with awe at what a good job they did.
To be fair, the way I see it is the ones without the mask look more like "what the fuck is this shit" rather than in awe of how great it is
TBF, I was also in awe the 1st time I saw it.
Very impressive grift.
