Sixth Form/Years 12 and 13 in the UK are often optional and preparatory for First Year University courses which means those who leave school before that point either continue through education via College then go to Uni or take a complete different route unrelated to tertiary education.

US high schools are 14-18 because it’s year 9-12, and generally you start year 8 at 13, 7 at 12, 6 at 11, etc, unless you repeat something. Like I had a friend who repeated fucking kindergarten back in the day.
