It failed because it was dogshit terrible. They killed off John Connor unceremoniously in the first 5 minutes and replaced his role as the future savior of humanity with a Mexican illegal immigrant who spent most of the movie being hunted by a Terminator disguised as a Border Patrol agent.
Now if only they'd been stunning and brave enough to have the lead be a trans disabled Mexican illegal immigrant, and maybe had Connor sodomised to death to really drive home their disdain for the old, problematic audience, there's no limit to how much money they could have made!

Plus it felt like in order for the one girl to work, they had to kill the John Connor character to do it. The geriatric "badass" Sarah Connor was even worse than the elderly Arnie in it. It was like watching one of these fat Steven Seagul movies where he looks like Moviebob with a painted-on hairdo, or Bruce Willis with dementia.
It's my understanding that Sarah Connors is featured much more prominently in the movie. Maybe including an old beat-up Linda Hamilton made it "Your Grandma's Terminator Movie."
