How about we leave it with the country that has a history of preserving anything historical though they are fairly shit at preserving their culture..

Well that wouldn’t be the USA or UK these days.

US, open to debate unfortunately

UK, they nearly fully destroyed a statue, the backlash was so massive from that one incident it effectively killed BLM in the UK overnight. Same thing with the oil protesters which make sense, all these historic works are from a time things weren't so pathetic.

Egypt has a very impressive history museum, and they've done a far better job than many of their neighbors.

How would you like it if Chinese archaeologists came to America, excavated sites all over, found origina copies of the constitution, bricks from Washington's house, etc., and kept them in a Chinese museum?

It sucks for western civilization and it sucks for museum accessibility, but fair is fair. I think most of the relics the Western powers took should be returned.

Greece wants a shitload of stuff back too, so it's not just the non-west.

I can understand the sentiment, but during the Arab spring, didn't a group of demonstrators attack and badly damage some of the items in an Egyptian museum.

My point is that despite all the oil protestors throwing shot at paintings, the measures where already taken to protect them by having them behind glass (though still prosecute the idiots).

If the extremist both religious and left are taken care of, then maybe we can talk about it as they are the ones to target history first. You can want items back but it's better to have them back in one piece and preserved than let them be destroyed.

They tried. Their current president moved troops in front of it and told them to Fuck Off with Tanks.

Unlike the enlightened west where glue sniffers with soup are allowed to throw what they want, where they want.

absolute bollocks - after the arab spring experts went into the museums to check the damage they found them putting together artefacts with superglue ffs

I didn't say they are fully up to Western standards. I said they have a very impressive history museum (collection size, building size, general facilities, and including preservation capabilities).

The article you link even quotes the conservation experts as the museum saying the person who broke and (then incorrectly repaired) the mask fucked up.

The country that used mummy wrappings to wrap their lunches... might not be the best at cultural artefact preservation?

Oh, em, gee.

This is like someone who gives you a lottery ticket for your birthday, but when he finds out it was a $1000+ winner, demands it back.

Well, at least Egypt tends to take care of its historical artifacts. Other countries in the region tend to see their artifacts destroyed left and right by idiot insurgents.

While this is true, I just think, on principle… It’s probably safer in London.

I can’t imagine that, say, 50 years ago, anyone imagined that what happened in Syria and Iraq would go down, or that we, as a collective humanity, would lose all the treasures that we have, as a result…

I don’t trust the Egyptian regime, either.

But more importantly, on principle, these “handbacks” are just a really bad idea, a dangerous precedent, and should be fought against, particularly of one of the most important pieces of stone ever found.

Fuck, even The Guardian acknowledges that the idea of this “handback” shit is flawed and dangerous…

When even a regime mouthpiece acknowledges the idea may not be so great… Perhaps we should stop and think.

In 50 years, several London districts will be Muslim-majority and British people a small minority in the city, so what's the difference with sending it to Egypt?

Several european countries will be failed-states overrun by Africans by then, but probably not the UK yet then.

The dwindling White population, no matter how much they cherish artifacts and preserving history, won't be in a position to preserve anything with the demographic trends.

and other foreigners that have wormed their way into government are already saying it's a good thing.

Tis true. Like a good part of the reason why Egypt has managed to keep most of its artifacts safe is likely because it's generally been able to keep insurgency movements reasonably suppressed. If that ever changed, then there's no telling how much damage might occur.

And precedence is another concern, though I'm not well versed in whether or not there have been cases where older artifacts have been sent back to the Egyptian government upon requests/demands.

Egypt is extremely unstable and they can't even defeat IS in Sinai for many years now (https://twitter.com/GodListensToDua/status/1593996019410288641). There might very well be severe food crisis there next year due to how Ukraine is largely out of the game in food supply, with the population especially angry since they instead invest in building a new capital.

This outpost crew was like from a Far Cry game: https://twitter.com/worldonalert/status/851857460667305984

IS call Egyptian troops "Mossad militias".

Ah, I wasn't actually apprised of recent activities there. Didn't occur to me how dated my awareness of what's been going on there was. Gods I've gotten lazy.

I mean I knew it had the tendency to be on a slow simmer, but didn't know it was bubbling that much now.

Egyptians didn't give a fuck about the artifacts of the ancient kuffar until they realized white people would pay just to look at them.

To be fair, modern Egypt is a lot better at preserving artifacts. They know that having the Rosetta Stone means tourist money in the bank, otherwise they probably wouldn't have bothered to ask for it back.
