And, of course, following a few "see, here's the people you liked!" specials, it's right back to diversity hires with a black dude whose only major role so far was apparently a Netflix series about high school students coming to terms with their sexuality.
I stopped part way through Capaldi's run. Was losing interest as his episodes went on and when they did the Xmas special with River it just felt like a suitable point to stop since it was an ending for River and leaving it "open-ended" for Calapdi also worked.
Plus, it was a good ending. Sure it wasn't "they lived happily ever after" because in River's timeline the Library was next but the two still had years together which was close enough.

Someone will praise or criticize it for being woke (or not woke enough) after the season finale without spoiling, and then you'll know.

I'm honestly surprised that the series wasn't shitcanned after the last few seasons. Especially the episode "The Timeless Children", that retconned nearly all the lore and permanently made it a much worse story.

So Steven Moffat was MEH as a Dr Who show runner and the series went downhill under him. Matt Smith was a decent Dr, Capaldi was meh, but the writing went down.
Then Chris Chibnall shows up and absolutely skullfucks the series the death with woke bullshit. Woman dr? eh. The true crime was making a joke of a backstory for the dr as some sore of godlike little girl victim, not a time lord, and then making her into a fat black woman.
The end of the Davies era in 2008 had 8-12 million viewers. Chibnall pushed it consistently under 5 million after only 2 seasons of utter trash.
It sounds like whoever is in charge begged Davies & Tennant to come back to revive the corpse of the show.
