The Atlantic: The Masks We’ll Wear in the Next Pandemic (archive.ph)

Two and a half years into this pandemic, it’s hard to believe that the masks widely available to us today are pretty much the same masks that were available to us in January 2020. N95s, the gold standard as far as the average person is concerned, are quite good: They filter out at least 95 percent of .3-micron particles—hence N95—and are generally the masks of preference in hospitals. And yet, anyone who has worn one over the past two and a half years will know that, lucky as we are to have them, they are not the most comfortable. At a certain point, they start to hurt your ears or your nose or your whole face. When you finally unmask after a lengthy flight, you’re liable to look like a raccoon. Most existing N95s are not reusable, and although each individual mask is pretty cheap, the costs can add up over time. They impede communication, preventing people from seeing the wearer’s facial expressions or reading their lips. And because they require fit-testing, the efficacy for the average wearer probably falls well short of the advertised 95 percent. In 2009, the federal government published a report with 28 recommendations to improve masks for health-care workers. Few seem to have been taken.

This insanity being pushed is disgusting, if you have facial hair period, n-95s are useless, if you aren’t specifically fit tested for size, n-95s are useless, if you take them off at any point they must be replaced. The absolute horrid stupidity coming from these troglodytes with authority that parade as scientists is disgusting.

I mean, we’re at the point of “the Speed of Science” being used as a real, unironic defence by these people…

I literally don’t think they care. It’s just ideology at this point - we’ve gone from “facts don’t care about your opinions” to “these are the facts I choose to believe and you cannot refute them with counter-evidence”…

Sadly. Insanely…

I'm not convinced N-95s work at all. The studies we have pre-2020 on N95s all demonstrated that even in a hospital setting, N95 masks did not reduce respiratory infections (actually potentially increase them).

These are small sample size studies, but if healthcare workers in hospitals can't make it work, then there's basically no chance it can work anywhere.

Oh my SCIENCE! You're not allowed to question the narrative or the experts! You need to cower in fear, do what they say, and take your shot.

You definitely shouldn't question Large Pharma Corporation.

What's that? Bernie Sanders is running again and he's promising to stand up to big corporations??!? He's pefect!

The really concerning part to me is this bit:

Retrofitting a nation’s worth of buildings with superior ventilation systems or germicidal lighting is likely a long-term mission, though, requiring large-scale institutional buy-in and probably a considerable amount of government funding.

Plus there's an article linked between the paragraphs about the same.

If governments actually decide to go with this in any capacity, the best case scenario is that it does nothing except waste even more trillions of dollars. Worst case, it actually somewhat works, and it obliterates most people's immune systems because the bug people living in their germicidal-light-lit pods won't be exposed to harmless germs - until one evolves that doesn't give a shit about the lights and causes another muh pandemic.

We've already seen the catastrophic effects of lack of exposure in children.

I’m pretty sure that is almost literally what they attempted to claim (or similar), at one point, so you’re not far off (scarily)!

We developed COVID vaccines faster than we’d developed any vaccine in history, and began administering them just a year after the virus first infected humans. The vaccines turned out to work better than top public-health officials had dared hope.

We're reaching gaslighting levels that go beyond anything we've ever seen...

If the mask filters less than the rubber sealed p3 filter mask I wear for spray painting, it's not stopping an airborne virus.

For over two years now, no one actually has believed there was a deadly disease going around or that the masks do anything. If people did, they wouldn't be out shopping and they certainly wouldn't be sitting at a restaurant without masks.
