This is a big problem with all live-action adaptations of animated movies/TV shows, race swapped or not.
Animation affords chunks of frames to exaggerated facial expressions that even the best actors/actresses cannot really emulate. Doesn't help that most performers these days have perpetual dead NPC look in their eyes.
with this on its moreso the eyes on "Ariel" are spaced like a bovine. Add in the red seaweed dreads and its more like Old Greg than Ariel.
She's got the Innsmouth look. Guess the Deep Ones have been bumping uglies with their neighbors in the sea.
Carl Benjamin (Sargon of Akkad) made a really pertinent point in his breakdown of Prey about how the actress could play the role perfectly, but the soft, rounded features and qualities of her appearance show that she's never experienced any kind of hardship her entire life. It makes it impossible to imagine her as a pre-modern tribeswoman.
I remember one of my history teachers said Monty Pythons Holy Grail was oddly accurate as the only clean characters were nobility and the commoners were all covered in dirt and shit.
See also: Blackadder. Particularly the WW1-set final series, vis a vis, say, the vast majority of Hollywood movies set in that time period, lol…
It also allows color and aesthetic options that live action cannot hope to achieve.
Such as here where the blue of the water and redness of the hair hair massively oppose one another to draw your eye directly where they want it. Same with the shadowing drawing your eyes to the boat in the top image.
Whereas the live action is just washed out and boring, your eyes cannot focus as easily on where the film wants them to be and they instead wander to judgemental details.
YMS's review of the "live action" Lion King is hilarious, pointing out how lifeless it is compared to the original.
How fucking far apart are her eyes?
So far apart that I thought it was a live action adaptation of Ice Age.
Well, even thought they never got a redhead, they managed to get an actual fish.
Look up redheads replaced by blacks
WE MIRELURKS NOW
Looks like film/tv is going through the same "make everything so fucking dark you can't see anything without setting the brightness to max and/or cranking up the gamma" trend videos games went through in the mid/late 90s.
I read someone speculate the reason they're doing this is it's easier to hide cheap green screen effects.
Yeah, this is the first thing I noticed in the trailer, too…
That, and how jarringly ugly the “undersea” backgrounds are, let alone “Ariel” herself, lol…
So stupid. And they are using the usual defense. Mermaids are in folklore all over the world. So of course take a Danish story and race swap
This isn't the first time
True. And won’t be the last. What is crazy is that they think they are being original. I simply challenge them to write their own story
How colorless. No pun intended.
I know that most black women are ugly, but there are some that aren't. So why the fuck don't they get one of the non-hideous ones for their blackwashing projects? I literally don't understand it.
Frances Tiafoe’s girlfriend (US Open semi-finalist) fits that description, IMHO. Also Rihanna, at times.
So overall, yeah, I agree…
like 80% caucasian...
Yeah, I too was surprised by how dark and generally uninviting they made the “sea” look in this new trailer…
It doesn’t look at all appealing, and that’s the part of the movie where it (theoretically) should, lol…
Yeah these adaptations seem even worse than any of the Japanese live action adaptations or even those films made by that director to take advantage of German tax law.
You could still see a hint of passion behind, these just feel dead.
Some fish half-assing everything, as usual.
I saved some good stuff

Here to remind you that the original Disney's Little Mermaid is basically feminist propaganda that missed the fairy tale's moral. It also has a drag queen because of course it does
I really, really don’t think Ursula is meant to be interpreted that way…
Horrible fat, possibly “qweer” (by “Current Year” standards, perhaps. I doubt it was meant that way) black woman? Sure.
But I’m nearly 100% sure “drag queen” was not what they were going for, there, lol…
Well, if so, that’s just sad.
The character is not male, so…
I dunno.
It literally wouldn’t make sense for Ursula to be a drag queen, in the story (even the “Disneyfied” version*), even if the animation may have aped (lol) at that…
Dark Souls: the Little Mermaid Edition
The right is what happens when Ariel goes hollow? That's what they're going for yes?
SOVL
I'm relatively ignorant on this subject and I finally have decided to correct this.
Christian and other Abrahamic religious "bros", what is the soul? Do you believe in the psychic realm? I assume no real evidence exists, as this would be counter-factual to the very concept of the soul. Is this correct?
addendum: psychic realm = the realm not perceivable by the 5 senses, and which does not follow the cause->effect rule, or if it does, the chain of cause->effect is so deep that it is not perceivable within a human lifetime.
