Looks like film/tv is going through the same "make everything so fucking dark you can't see anything without setting the brightness to max and/or cranking up the gamma" trend videos games went through in the mid/late 90s.
I read someone speculate the reason they're doing this is it's easier to hide cheap green screen effects.

That, and how jarringly ugly the “undersea” backgrounds are, let alone “Ariel” herself, lol…
