Notice how they do that with characters that are already known and liked. No one cares that much if it is a new character, but they want to ruin already liked characters.
Ding ding ding. What's especially insiduous is that it's sometimes not Widely broadcasted, just a "Read it on our website." So then suddenly, a normie who just plays video games to have fun says "Man, this girl who acts like and is just a normal girl is cool," and it signals to the alphabet soup "normie accepts men who think they're girls? ASDNAFDBALDFB" while normie would, if he knew, say "Huh that's kind of a weird change, I don't like this new direction".
It's not only that, their intention is to subvert what is stable, what is virtuous, what is true, what is traditional, and what people like, and pervert it, often times inverting it to the complete opposite, to weaken and destroy people, making them easier to control, which is their ultimate goal.
Naturally, when one is convinced the only thing about a character that matters is gender, one is not going to write a compelling character. In fact, the Woke Cult prevents even the possibility of a compelling character because one must never attribute any kind of negative personality trait to any of the Protected Ones.
For the side that's always complaining about appropriation, taking an existing fleshed out character and just slapping on the trans label is literally taking something that doesn't belong to them.
In a lot of ways, it parallels exactly how the 41% crowd "breeds".
A single, subtle line in a book that almost nobody is going to buy is now "ruining" a character that has always been known as a male dragon using a female gnome's form? You're either acting deranged, or you're allowing sensationalist idiots to manipulate you into getting angry over nothing.
A single, subtle line in a book that almost nobody is going to buy is now "ruining" a character that has always been known as a male dragon using a female gnome's form?
If that's ruining anything, you're psychotic and why nobody takes us seriously. And this isn't optics shit, this is just me not wanting to be associated with idiots.
There is a big cultural war going on. This isn't an isolated incidence in a void. Also, this isn't my first Rodeo with Blizzard. When they do this, I know exactly where they're going with this and what they're aiming at, and I refuse to entertain it for one milisecond. If this charactization happened 100 years ago, perhaps we'd be having a different tone of conversation.
Ah yes... lgbt chars is the recipe to become top seller and have top users again. No need to maybe make a new game with better mechanics, graphics, story, characters or fix issues.
Yep.. do something that literally only 0.00005% of people care about. These companies are retarded. They pander to a tiny fraction of the population and out of that tiny fraction.. only an even tinier fraction plays games. Like wtf?
as much as I'd like to agree with you... it seems like the proportion of people who care about this among the people who are into this game is not nearly that low. check out the twitter replies to see what I mean.
How many of those people actually spend money about the topic they pander for? Twitter replies are meaningless and paint an inaccurate demographics picture.
right, but one could just as well ask: how many of the people who are angry about this, are mostly attracted to the outrage and culture war aspects.
my belief is that a lot of these people are casuals, if they care about the game at all. they're "tourists". they're not going to spend money on this game.
keep in mind that I'm not saying that they shouldn't be upset about this. I'm also not saying that everyone who cares about this is like that. nor that most of the game's fans are not bothered by this (I'm sure they are). but certainly these people exist.
right, but one could just as well ask: how many of the people who are angry about this, are mostly attracted to the outrage and culture war aspects.
A lot, and yes, that applies to plenty of people in this community and platform.
Some of the habitually offended do, in fact, have some financial stake in what they argue for, but I think we've seen enough examples over the years that they do not represent the aggregate consumer base. Their existence is not meaningful in these types of discussions.
Otherwise media such as Ghostbusters and modern-day comics would be selling like gangbusters instead of severely disappointing or outright standing at a deficit. It probably does draw in some newer audience while hemorrhaging others; the net balance matters.
Thing is, do they actually pay to play the game, or do they just play the free demo version? Are they customers, or are they the same sort of people from a few decades ago who talked like "Oh, I'd so go to Bingo more if the halls weren't so full of cigarette smoke" who then never showed up for Bingo once the smoking laws hit (and in fact, the halls emptied and many shut down in my hometown, where it was all the rage, and supported by American gamblers looking for bigger pots than what Michigan allowed.)
None of the people who bitched about smoke-filled bingo halls actually played bingo. Or at least, weren't the fans of it who went every week. THOSE people smoked heavily ...
I worked in bingo halls for three years, volunteer, twice a week in the early 80s. Watched as by the end of the 80s, the only place for teenagers to go, a roller rink, was turned into a bingo hall because of the bingo craze - which died the instant the tobacco laws came in. Windsor, Ontario (aka Canada's Armpit.)
I could see that. To normies that would be considered a good thing, before GG when I was still on the left I thought how nice to have a gay character in pokemon, now I want them to leave my hobbies alone.
I assume a lot of those still playing the game are on the left to some extent, and as long as they do not start making Illidan a fag and Thrall his bitch they will not care. If you sticked around after the feminist inspired train rack that was BFA then a minor character that has some story behind it that has no impact or even dialogue in the game is completely irrelevant.
You’re not wrong but you’re missing his point. These idpol gimmicks are always the death rattle of dying media. Jerking off all the Gen-x moms so they’ll buy more pets or whatever the fuck they’re selling now isn’t a long-term success strategy and theyre going to get stuck in a downward spiral like the newspapers where they become more and more reliant on this cringey niche crowd. it’s just gonna get worse from here.
Even back in the long long long ago days, there was the potential for a tranny joke. You have full character customization even outside of the tutorial, paying a fee to change your base clothes, base hair, and even changing into a girl with cash. But, back then it was moreso a joke, a reference to that LotR "No man can kill me, haha, linguistics joke a woman can kill me", where during a quest you would need to swap to a girl, and then could swap back to normal. Thankfully, it seems that Jagex has forgotten this feature exists and puts zero emphasis on it.
Yeah, like the old B.C.-level joke about the "man-eating" dinosaur ignoring the Fat Broad because "it's not a woman-eating dinosaur" (that also happened to look like a "brontosaur".)
It was jokes like that which ushered in the change in common name of H. sapiens from "Man" to its former adjective, "human".
I pray, in 40 years from now when everything is shit, a new visionary of the intellect of Tolkien can rise from the ashes. He single handedly reinvented the way fiction and fantasy worked and hammered away at the drudge of language.
As far as fantasy would handle mental illness, at least this one makes sense. She is not really transgendered, she changed genders and is now normal. Having actual transgenders in the game would be retarded.
I honestly would not care if it was a new character but doing it to an established character is what annoys the crap out of me. It's a forced change to pander.
If it weren't for rl trannies going "SHE'S JUST LIKE ME", I would have no issue with completely magical world characters being like "hey, if I use my magic to look like a girl, I'll be able to slip into places easier, abuse psychological blindspots". Creative utilization of magic systems for problem solving is cool, but not when "shaving, drugging myself up, doing a Darwin to my reproductive parts, and yelling online = magic"
Honestly, between blk grrrl mgic and this shit, magic gets a terrible rap nowadays.
There's another character that is actually directly trans in WoW - a woman who died, went to the afterlife (this expansion is the expansion that happens in the afterlife), and chose a male body instead of a female one (it's weird, characters basically change into new species when they die, WoW is odd).
It makes perfect sense.
Also, Chromie always had a male dragon name and a female gnome form. This is not new or particularly forced. If any character in the game makes sense to "reveal" as trans (and even that is done subtly and respectfully), it would be Chromie.
The initial name I am sure was a mistake no one noticed and then went with it when the theories came out. There was another one in pandaria, it was this female char with male voice in one of the temples, I think horde side but I can't be sure. Again I'm 90% sure it was a mistake but I bet a dev will say it was intentional and is trans or something.
Sorry, WoW, but that isn't going to save your game. Your first wrong move was in gutting LFR and listening to the 1% about how it should be "tourist mode" and drop no set gear, while making everything as irritating as Pouncing Tiger Island.
That and subscription games are a rip-off when the same money could buy so many more better games out there.
See you in Biomutant, bitches. Oh, no, I won't, because it's pure single-player, which trumps multiplayer all to hell, always.
The old blizzard died long ago so it’s not really a shock that insert character that we have known about for years is suddenly trans…. Jaina is trans, Anduin is trans, Thrall is trans, Alexstraza is Trans, screw it Alleria and Trullyan from Warcraft 2 are also trans.
Chromie is a male dragon. Dragons in WoW can take other forms. Chromie usually manifests as a female gnome. The designers said years ago that Chromie was supposed to be a female dragon but somewhere along the line someone forgot that and wrote about the dragon being male.
This is not a trans situation where someone is trying to be something that they're not. Nor is it a retcon. It's just a minor character that they didn't put enough effort into developing where people are just now noticing the lack of consistency.
I'm not saying it's true, but I'm going to throw a theory out there: at some point in the future Danuser comes out as trans, and like Nathanos before her Chromie is getting retconned because he's using her as his self-insert.
"Oh no, our subscribers are declining! Quick, let's pander to a community of people who 41% of them will kill themselves! That'll keep our subscriber count from going down!"
Things must be really bad. For the past year, everything's been cancelled so they really don't have anything better to do than play WoW. Still, people are cancelling their subscriptions.
This is annoyingly sensationalist. They did not openly refer to it as "transgender" at all - what they did was extremely subtle and tasteful and in complete alignment with what has been shown in the game and outside of it. Chronormu (Chromie) has always been a male dragon that has taken the form of a female gnome. Even if it was a mistake initially, it was still always a male dragon in a female gnome's form. No fucking shit he felt more comfortable, that's why he picked a female body in the first place.
They did not "reveal" anything, they just continued playing into the exact same thing that they've been playing into since Classic.
I completely understand the hatred that arises when trans people are used as a weapon to beat you with, but this autistic screeching about absolutely nothing is embarrassing. I could not care less if you dislike trans people, that's fine, I get it. But just don't be fucking factually wrong.
There are 2 potentially trans characters in the entire game - and neither of them is rubbed into your face at all. Also, you guys often say "it's a world with magic, if they're trans, why don't they just change their body?" - and they literally did that, which makes perfect sense. There's no bullshit about "oppression", there's no leftist bullshit. When you intentionally go into options where you choose to learn about the characters with no reward or benefit, the character just tells you "I chose a male body when I died and went into the afterlife".
As for Chromie, the character mentioned, it's a minor line a book that nobody is going to buy anyway.
Works of art do not float in the Ether. Blizzard is very much promoting the idea that if you feel the opposite sex, you belong in the opposite sex, and it is right and proper for you to be seen as one and everyone around you should treat you the way you feel like, disregarding reality. We're here to tell them that is not the case.
If you think this isn't the message Blizzard is promoting, go ahead and go against it in game / on the official Blizzard forums, and best of luck with that.
Lastly, if fiction universe is detached from reality and in magical La-La land you can spawn whichever body you feel like having, then both of Blizzard's 'trans' characters wouldn't be trans, they'd be the opposite sex than they're portrayed as. Not their body being different, but the characters themselves. Instead Blizzard makes a point out of it in both characters' stories.
Which, y'know, is why nobody in the game or in Blizzard is calling them trans. You're letting idiot journos control your mind.
Also, your perspective is that of denying that trans people exist, which is fine, but I don't think it makes sense. I support therapy being researched so an alternative to transition is found, but as it is, only transition actually works.
Even Blizzard has sense enough to avoid mentioning the word trans in game when not necessary. Suffice to describe trans characters and omit the language.
I'm not denying anyone's existence. People are free to feel as whatever they like. And I'm free to reject their feelings. Just because a person feels a certain sex does not mean I'm obligated to play along. Feelings do not make reality. The notion that feeling something makes one so is ridiculous. The notion that people should be coerced to partake in the pretense is beyond monstrous.
Transition works? How so? Does it lower suicide rates? Has there been long term studies showing it improves happiness and quality of life? It doesn't actually change the person's sex. FtM often pass, though from what I read they're generally unhappy. MtF rarely pass, and even that is mostly time limited to the earlier years. Putting children on puberty blockers is child abuse.
From what I've seen the main thing the trans movement has been successful at is generating a lot of noise and using a lot of strong arming to try to force 'acceptance'. The media being extremely far left has helped them a great deal in this.
Many self described trans people have been let down by society, which has pushed them in this direction and encouraged them as being heroic and virtuous. When the dust has settled and their promoters have moved on, the individuals will have to pick up the pieces of their lives. Sadly many of them will find that they do not fit together again.
Transition works? How so? Does it lower suicide rates?
Yes. That's quite literally the point, and why it happens. Studies are worthless, there are no legitimate ways to ascertain the truth in our world. The only science I even consider trusting is science coming from my (based) country.
So I'm looking for some statistics and sadly a lot of it comes from psychological sciences and pro trans organizations both of which I don't trust to be objective about it.
We observed no increase in suicide death risk over time and even a decrease in suicide death risk in trans women. However, the suicide risk in transgender people is higher than in the general population and seems to occur during every stage of transitioning.
Overall I'd say these numbers are inconclusive. Certainly not something I'd recommend to anyone dealing with this issue as a means to stave off suicide. If transitioning was a solution, I'd expect to see more pronounced increase in overall happiness which these suicide numbers do not convince me is taking place.
(Interestingly enough MtF kill themselves at nearly triple the rate of FtM, which is similar to suicide rate proportions in men and women overall.)
If I can get philosophical about the topic, while overall happiness is a goal in life, how you achieve said happiness is also important. Even if going through surgery and living your life as the opposite sex were to increase your happiness, I'd have to question the price you'd be paying for it. To name two examples out of many, MtF can not get pregnant. FtM have a weaker bone structure and are smaller framed. Both of these things are real and immutable. If you live your life as if you were a woman, but unable to have children, that affects your quality of life. If you live your life as if you were a man, but are physically weaker and more prone to injuries, that affects your quality of life to. Certain life occupations are much harder for you if not outright impossible. This disassociation from reality is a price that puts 'happiness as the goal of life' into question. It's not just being happy, it's how you choose to be happy and what makes you happy.
Instead, how about the following alternative:
Accept reality. Live life according to the hand you were dealt. It may not be what you want, it may feel wrong, but reality does not bend to your will. Maybe you'll grow out of it, maybe it'll get better with time, maybe it will not. I know this isn't possible to all people and sadly some people we have no answer for, but this notion that a transition surgery as a good default solution to people struggling with this is counter productive and destructive.
That's not inconclusive, of course it's going to be higher than the general population, but it's still lower after transitioning. That's the goal.
MtF killing themselves more makes sense since the changes from testosterone are permanent. So a female can transition into a man relatively easily and naturally - voice and all, whereas a male can't transition into a woman easily at all. I can assure you, you would never guess that the average FtM was a FtM at all. But anyone can guess who a MtF is. And the insane left refuses to acknowledge that it's not equal and that they can't just use the same things.
While I agree with most of what you're saying for a mentally healthy person, your "alternative" is equivalent of telling a heavily depressed person to just be happy. Both of my trans friends (both FtM) acknowledge that dysphoria is a serious illness, so it's not like they agree with the insane pro-trans establishment that refuses to acknowledge it as an illness. Transition essentially helps a trans person go from a severely mentally ill person to a relatively stable person who can function in society - something I've seen first hand (which I would have called anecdotal in the past, but science is compromised so anecdotal evidence is all we have).
Notice how they do that with characters that are already known and liked. No one cares that much if it is a new character, but they want to ruin already liked characters.

These Marxist writers are not capable of producing a character that people like.
So they take your favorite character and replace his head with a 15 inch black dildo covered in lubricant...
(I got this from the critical drinker, but can’t find the video...)

I found this https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7317390/ which includes 49 suicides (0.6% of participants). Hard to draw much for pre and post but they conclude:
