Harvard MD: "Worked with a med student for the first time in residency this week. First thing I told her was to not worry about trying to impress me because she’d get a glowing eval for simply showing up and being interested." (archive.is)

You're drooling all over yourself and killing everything you touch? Doesn't matter, I'll give you a glowing eval for showing up.

Let this motivate you to live as healthy as possible, so you will never be at the mercy of these monsters.

Good advice in general. Even before this medicine had largely become an exercise in maximizing billing to the insurance companies (whether they be private or nationalized) and shilling pills.

In a past life I worked someplace that sold a product that was only commercially successful because it allowed hospitals to bill an extra code to insurance, not because it actually helped patients or doctors.

No it was an "expert system", which with a bit of tweaking it could generate a nice report to "conclude" exactly what the doctor had already concluded without using the tool; and then the doctor could bill that they'd "used" the system to aid in their diagnosis.

Yeah the lead designer was pretty demoralized when he learned that was all it was being used for.

Assuming this isn't the system you made, I'm going to make a device that lets you punch in symptoms to get a diagnosis. It will have a handy chart on the back that will show you what symptoms produce which diagnosis.

Do that except with lab results and that is basically what the company (not me) did, minus the chart (the system was too complicated for a chart but wasn't accurate enough to actually be useful as a diagnostic aid).

I am negatively impressed with the number of Asians agreeing with this nonsense in the feed... Will be anyone competent left in the US in the long run?

I can see the value in encouraging students to not worry to impress. As, well I find the people I get the displeasure of working with to be annoying and not the cream of the crop anyway. Maybe I'm just annoyed by a specific person who is exactly one of these and really not qualified for the job they are in. Guess what, they are black. Shocking I know. The crazy thing it's not laziness or even apolitical stupidity, for some dumbass reason they just decided to put this person into a position they have no business in.

But yeah, I'll give you a glowing review for showing up?! As a doctor in residency no less?

That's what affirmative action and quotas do. These things don't create competent people. They put incompetent people into positions they are not ready to fulfill.

You might be misinterpreting what he's saying. The evaluation is important but obsessing over the evaluation is counterproductive. Telling her not to worry about it will make her a better doctor if doing so removes a distraction from her training.

I agree with the first part.

The second part was completely crazy though. If only for showing us a window into his own mind, what he cares about. It's like Ibram Kendi who says that black students should not be judged based on their accomplishments, but based on how much they want to know.

The window into his own mind is that he is a former medical student who once suffered from performance anxiety and wanted to defuse that tension on her first day. Don't twist that into the worst possible interpretation of his words unless you have some evidence to believe that is true.

she’d get a glowing eval for simply showing up and being interested

How are you going to spin this?

By not being such a bloody autist that I would rules lawyer my way out of comprehending the meaning of a sentence. It's a tweet, not a computer program.

"...to not worry about trying to impress me because she’d get a glowing eval for simply showing up and being interested" does not mean that she'd still get a glowing eval if she punched one of the patients. It doesn't mean she'd still get a glowing eval if she ate all the medication. It doesn't mean she'd still get a glowing eval if she started screaming racial slurs at him. It means only that she'd still get a glowing eval if she doesn't obsess over trying to impress her supervisor.

He didn't REALLY mean that? Next you'll claim that Ibram Kendi didn't REALLY mean that black students should be graded based on how much they 'want' to know. It's plain and obvious.

I'll tell you this: Harvard has been overrated for YEARS. It gets by with its celebrity status to have every kid apply, then weeds out everyone except for the mega-rich who can "bribe" (not always actual bribery, sometimes they just take them because they'll have money to donate no matter what) their way in or the mega-poor who are just colored enough to give them woke points. Because so little students are evaluated based on merit anymore, they're mostly below average students and the rigor and academic integrity that used to make Harvard the pinnacle is non-existent. It's infuriating to see some of the recent graduates I've seen tout their intelligence and then absolutely make a fool of themselves.

It's common among far-left types to use the generic 'she'. But the funny thing is that if they ever found a reason to hate him, they could use this to 'cancel' him by claiming that he was suggesting that a female student would not be competent.

I agree. But I have the same worry about male doctors.

Just pretend to be a Muslim or something.
