Growing up there were the "jocks" and the "nerds". But when did they diverge?
It's almost as if the media, for at least 80 years, has been trying to divide people so they infight across little subcultural rifts instead of aligning with one another along ethnic lines to fight their common enemies...
But even without the deliberate magnification, there's been a split between "white collar" and "blue collar" for centuries. Everyone wants to believe that they have value and they know what they're familiar with. The man who works all day in the fields thinks how hard you work in the fields is the measure of a man's quality. The man who spends all day balancing books thinks your skill with numbers is the measure of a man's quality. The longer they're isolated from one another, the more set in their ways they'll become. Then multiply that by rural/urban and regional splits.
Within a town, church probably played a big role in getting men from both groups to interact and learn respect one another. That fell by the wayside. Everyone's isolated or in self-selected echo chambers now and we're judging one another with whatever our strongest attribute is as the only scale.
How about near-instant but requiring vast amounts of energy input? Think temporary wormholes generated by a megaproject. You wouldn't be able to spam travel, but the distance wouldn't be the limiting factor either. No reason to go to a specific spot until you receive an indication of life, which would likely be a signal traveling at 1 LY/y.
It only takes us 3 days to get the moon, but we don't do it that all that often.
area I'm in is a touristy town that sees 5x the local pop of tourists coming in during the summer
I'm not questioning you and I've got no experience with the contemporary dating scene. But you made me wonder something. If you're living somewhere like that, does the "spring break" style debauchery become enough of the local culture that locals just accept it as normal while they're growing up and get shaped by it?
Could your personal experience be mostly a result of the locale? At the very least, you're going to see more literal whores in high tourism areas. Supply and demand.
I didn't like someone's argument, so I tried to get them banned. When there wasn't anything bannable in the thread, I dug through their profile looking for past transgressions. I found
- Can only charge people with crimes they committed
- Someone deciding to make a show of over legal acts, 54 years after the fact, is #MeToo bullshit. Not from this board.
- The First Amendment continues to exist
- Actual trolling. Also not from this board
This is sufficient evidence of wrong think. They should be purged.
I don't like all that guy's takes, but most here are contrarian at worst. If this is how you react to disagreement, you need to go back to Reddit. This shit is why we left in the first place.
If he does something bannable, report it and let the mods take care of it. But holy shit, your post is Reddit deja vu.
Being retarded isn't against the rules.
That was facetious but how about my other point.
For every illegal you deport, you let someone in legally from the same country. That's demographically equivalent to amnesty, but doesn't reward criminals. Do you have an argument against that or do you love illegals that much?
They're not gonna rush off to the countryside to pick almonds
All your arguments are predicated on thinking we should continue to have the exact same market that was built in illegal labor. We shouldn't. Maybe strawberries become a rare treat. Oh well. The price was being artificially suppressed by criminal activity. Almonds are a shit example because harvesting is extremely mechanized.
"Food prices will triple!" No. Prices of some specific foods will increase dramatically. Some marginally. Markets and habits will rebalance.
quit their jobs
There's already over 3x that many people doing no work.
Both the unemployment rate, at 4.3 percent, and the number of unemployed people, at 7.2 million, changed little in March. These measures also changed little over the year. (See table A-1.)
Eliminate welfare. You'd find millions suddenly hungry for any job.
And, while not my preference, nothing prohibits you from backfilling the deported illegals with would-be legal immigrants who are waiting in their home countries instead of committing crimes.
Motive is entirely irrelevant.
It's not irrelevant. Legal definitions of "abduction" frequently require the intent. For example, intent to deprive of liberty or to conceal then from an entity lawfully entrusted with them (parents, school, etc.).
Motive is very relevant.
All good points, with a few more reasons:
- Getting "paid" or a "credit" feels good. If they mark the new phone up $50 and then give you $50 for giving them garbage, customers feel like they're getting something special vs. the price just being $50 lower across the board.
- It prevents old phones from accumulating around the house. Seeing them leads to people questioning if they're spending too much on phones and realizing that they go through phones fast enough that buying the most expensive (highest margin) model is not worth it.
- It tricks them into thinking that the phone they're about to buy will have resale value, which rationalizes buying a higher end phone.
And for the former, this really comes off like asking a gun rights advocate what his favorite way of killing someone is. Yes, yes, I know someone is just itching to shout "guns are Constitutionally Protected and abortion isn't", but let's set that aside for a second.
Nice try. Immediately setting up a straw man to hide the initial error. Asking an abortion rights advocate about their favorite kind of abortion is like asking a gun rights advocate what their favorite kind of gun is. For your your analogy to work, the second person would have to be a "killing people advocate."
Guns can be owned and used without killing. Abortion always entails abortion.
There's only 3 names on that list that are relevant/recognizable
Paul Simon is the "Simon" in Simon and Garfunkel.
I find it hard to believe you've never heard of Stevie, Lionel, or Smokey unless you're a zoomer. It's always sad to see the legitimately good (usually 70s/80s) black artists on the same lists as shit Jay-Z. Only took a couple decades for the new "executives" to turn it into nothing but crime and degeneracy. I don't know that I'd call them great songwriters though. Some iconic hits for sure but it's not as if "All Night Long" is lyrically complex.
Willie's such a prolific songwriter he should on his own list.
Important to point out that it is better to have the W-4 set a bit too high than too low (less than 90% of what you end up owing). Yes, the "refund" you receive is essentially a interest-free loan to the feds BUT tax withheld from paychecks is counted as if it were evenly distributed throughout the year (unless changed with a Form 2210). And technically tax payments are owed quarterly. Which means if you under-withhold some of that money was due months ago. Too much and not only do you get get to pay the difference you also get penalties and/or deal with estimated taxes next time.
Not as much of an issue if your only income is from a paycheck, but worth being aware of.
I'm guessing the tweet is from a leftists given the use of 'beta',
It's the Greek character itself. Beta is a measure of volatility. Specifically the ratio of an individual stock's covariance to the market vs. the market's overall variance. Neutral beta is risk in line with the market. Low beta is less volatile than the market. "High beta" is something riskier than average.
The most disingenuous way to introduce every stand-up ever.
