Is it really any surprise that the guy who created the game full of homo skeletons and dyke fish-monsters turned out to be a huge fucking faggot? Undertale is bar none the most overrated piece of 8-bit Indy retro-faggot trash ever created. I love the Mother/Earthbound series but I really do think it’s one of the worst things to ever happen to video games. The amount of cancerous hipsterwank “quirky” Indy RPGs it has cursed us with almost makes me hate it.

I figure it was just the first game with meaningful replay consequences the normie crowd was exposed to, or at least the first one they could actually finish in order to start the replay parts. Add that "novelty" to all the "representation" and tie it all together with the oh so deep "lesson" of "just love and forgive people, they probably have emotional reasons for trying to kill you", slap on some cutesy "retro" 8-bit style (edit: which has the added bonus of letting just about any computer be able to run the game) and you have nice rock of normie video game crack.

In my personal experience, Undertale is the #1 overrated game of all time. I went in with an open mind after many, many recommendations on KiA and elsewhere and found myself losing faith in humanity little by little as I progressed. How could so many people actually claim to enjoy such a simplistic, uninteresting, predictable, poorly made thing?
Then I remembered boy bands, the Spice Girls, and Justin Beiber and remembered that people largely have atrocious taste in general and it saddened me to realize that video games had reached a critical mass that allows horrible taste to thrive.
The term "astroturfed" is coming to mind here. I wonder if they were ever really popular, or if the people who said they liked this shit, just said so to feel "part of the crowd", that crowd that the media sold them liked all that crap. Because notice that when such fads end, the same people who waved their new albums, and talked incessantly about whatever it was, turn around and say they never really liked it in the first place, OR just kind of slide off and talk about the current new fad being sold. I think I first noticed this phenomenon ... when disco died.
