I'd bet it was uber-expensive and either not worth keeping open, or they got what research data they needed and wanted to shut down ASAP to limit the costs.
I think the general public's increasing ai slop fatigue also played a role. They probably saw how nvidia got shit on for DLSS5 and realized they're burning piles of money to build something for a largely unreceptive audience.
But it's perfect for my 3D TV.
Nah, I'd say it just wasn't worth it. Too much effort, too little return back. Let other LLMs take care of it - the porn LLMs are making better ai slop movies than Sora ever did.

Right on. When this tech was first launched I remember people worried about it being abused for evil. But restricting it to only a select few is a stupid way to prevent that. In fact it's going to achieve the exact opposite: oh nice now you gave the power of deepfakes only to the government. I'm sure they would never abuse it 🙄

I'm more along the lines of we probably shouldn't have ventured this far into giving humanity the ability to spontaneously create fake realistic content... We're not yet ready for it.

It went from "what the fuck that's not how you fuck someone" to "one day this will make real pornstars obsolete and that might be a good thing in the long run"
It's a mixed bag since now people can basically make whatever fuck degenerate fantasy they want, but it also removes a lot of the incentives of shit like OnlyFans and prostitution when women can basically be replaced by something that doesn't require much money to invest into for gratification.
That side's already happening, you've got girlfriend/boyfriend AI chatbots that do essential replace onlyfans subscriptions.
The difference there is you have 100 people vying for the attention of 1 porn star, to 1 AI doing absolutely whatever you request... Both are interacting via a screen and you'll never meet up in person, the AI is legitimate competition.
I remember hearing stories of girls crashing out because their AI BF had a memory wipe or so lol.
Ultimately, I think the real scary and interesting part is when you can combine all of it into a VR world where you can basically do whatever... All it takes is more processing power to do it in real time. But just imagine u can throw on a VR head set and veg in bed living out whatever fantasy you want... AI can generate the entire world, people and interactions on the fly. You can tell it to reference whatever harem power fantasy manga you like best and make urself the MC. Weebs would loose their shit over something like this.
OpenAI is preparing for an IPO and I suspect the video generation aspect of its business is highly costly with little gain (anticipated) so they're axing it to improve their financial statements for their IPO.
If that was their reasoning, then they should just shutter the entire company, because none of it is profitable. If you look at their financials, they look like the suitcase full of IOUs in Dumb and Dumber.
Who knows. Maybe Microsoft wants to sell their stake in the company at a profit and they pushed for this. Could be anything really but it seems stupid to get rid of this unless they were fixing up their income statement or future balance sheet.

It's just not cost effective to sell novelty video generation directly to users. The compute costs are higher than what people are willing to pay. The real money is in B2B and government contracts, you know, enshittification.
