New York is a fucked up place.
And a lot of it is because of bullshit socialist policies. Thats pretty expensive as far as rent stabilized goes. There are definitely people in that building paying 1.5k a month. But property tax in the city doesnt account for forced below market rents. So landlords compensate by overcharging on fair market apartments.
The rent prices in NY are due to supply and demand plus an expectations bubble, inflated further by the sheer amount of foreign capital put in real estate as store of value.
People are free to move further upstate, but then they'd have to interact with those icky rural folks and far away from le heckin' hustle and bustle of le Big City™.
More money changes hands in NYC than almost anywhere else. If you're into money, it's the place to be, but you need people to do menial labor, so you afford some communism like rent controls into the system, so they can support your lifestyle.
It's a functional problem not an issue of style.
