Just finished up the show, Colin Farrell was spectacular as an actor, but the wahmaning, victim writing, and poor story structure sucked the life out of the otherwise genuinely good parts. I don’t know if it was the female showrunner or writers or what, but you could have entirely removed the female “rival (but secret actual main character)” from the entire series and the show would have drastically improved. They had gold with a Colin Farrell playing Tony soprano trying to scumbag his way to the top and nearly half the series episodes instead revolve around a girl boss “finding herself” after being a victim. It’s so fucking tiresome anymore that something can be a solid 7-8 tv show if you just completely remove half of it because it’s female victim porn.

I’m not interested in Batman without Batman. Is sounds stupid as fuck to me and I don’t give a shit if 12 year old Bruce Wayne is in it.
I'm with you there. Bruce Wayne is Batman (not the other way around) and Batman makes the setting.
Sometimes I like stories about the side characters, Tim Drake has had some good ones.
There's so many shows like that. Like I don't watch the last season of Netflix Voltron, and feel no reason to do so. They actually finished the story in the previous season and I don't see why they need to continue.
I'll even watch Scrappy Doo to complete my watching of all the scoobies. That said, I stopped on one movie and haven't finished it. Velma had a girl crush on a Latina villain and it was awful. Scooby had problems because Blue Falcon was a bit of a joke.
Stranger Things Season 3 and one episode of season 2 are so bad I tend to just skip them. Which is sad because the third season has a giant flesh monster.
I hear Mandolorean had shows beyond season 2. Good to know right?
More than three star wars movies?
More than one Matrix movie?
That'd be a horrible timeline to live in.
There’s clearly a white board memo at every major studio mandating that every new movie and show must feature 50% female representation among primary characters. These people literally cannot create a show about a male character without flanking him with equally or more capable female characters.
That is literally what ruined The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Half the film's runtime was unceremoniously taken up so a half-breed Jew could try to seduce the "evil" German.
The film would have been significantly better had she either been completely removed or had her role greatly reduced. We got to see so very little of Cavill and his crew compared to the secret agent wench. It was so frustrating. Even the black concierge was more tolerable than her, and at least his role made some sense.
The movie its a spinoff of is a woke mess carried hard by legitimately good actors like Colin Farrell making you forget all the nonsense in between their scenes.
Like, people talked endlessly about Riddler and Penguin bits and forgot that the movie literally had an AoC/Obama (depending on which writer was talking) expy as the Jesus figure they had to protect to save the city. Or that when showing "gang violence" they made sure that only the black one isn't in full face paint, so you can see that only the black one isn't pure evil and needing Batman bone breaking.
But despite that, Penguin was strong enough that everyone agreed he deserved a spinoff. Its no surprise however they brought the same baggage from the movie itself with them.
Yeah - watched the show up to the girl boss episode which was just completely out of nowhere, effectively bringing the story to a complete halt so girl boss could have her fee-fees explored about spoiled brat getting a Malibu Barbie when she wanted a ballerina Barbie.
I've seen four episodes and am enjoying it so far. Some of it is cheesy but totally watchable. So far I give it a 7/10 score but we'll see how the rest of the episodes go.
Episode 4 was the one where I knew the rest of the show was about to take a nose dive.
The Batman has put me to sleep both times I have watched it, so I'm hesitant to give it a try. All the media played up the performance of the "mother" and Penguin's driver and that adds to my hesitation.
Haven’t watched the movie, didn’t bother after I saw the race swapping. The driver was essentially a plot device who bounces in and out of even having a story because the writers couldn’t be bothered to try character development on anyone but girl boss. The mom was an ok actress whose character suffered from rushed episode pacing forced by… the main focus being on girl boss.
The girl boss thing is so forced in modern movie it's laughable. I see men defend 90 pound girl bosses beating up 240 lbs. Behemoths, but question a smaller guy fighting dudes. We live in a simp culture
In college I had a neckbeard try claiming that men and women have the same combat capabilities and that an all female platoon would be able to fight equally against and all male one. They truly exist in a perpetual state of delusion reinforced by media propaganda.
They can't even hold their own in sports, including professional tennis which has no physical contact between players. The 203rd ranked male player beat the Williams sisters back to back and they'd both been training their entire lives.
Do you remember the hysteria that followed McEnroe when he said Serena was the best female tennis player, and the media wanted him to say best tennis player? Even she was saying no, the male players beat me up during tennis. She said the men were so much better it was almost a different game. But McEnroe was a monster because he said she wasn't the apex of tennis players.
I tried explaining extremely generously that even the gear weight would make a massive difference due to average female and male weight, even if they were magically the same physical strength. The reply I got was “well they have trucks don’t they?” Another gem later on “how hard can it be to shoot a rifle accurately while moving.” They have no concept of reality because they have no experience and even worse, they’re too far up their own ass/ conditioned to even be able to realize that men and women might be different.
I'm guessing that guy was never in a platoon if he believes that. If they could why do they have a lower fitness threshold?
Of course not, he was the typical male neckbeard feminist who never saw a weight rack in his life. It’s funny, when you actually compete, whether is be physically or mentally, you actually get a gauge for ability or the drastic lack thereof.
Even if that platoon was the 1st Drone Strike platoon, where all the platoon does is sit at computers pressing buttons to initiate or not initiate drone strikes, well... The top Starcraft esports players are even all bio-male. I can see wanting to m'lady the women, I can see grasping for a theoretical singular edge case where probabilities align to allow an outlier... But on-average, platoon vs platoon combat? That's peak delulu.
It's probably because his yardstick for male performance is himself. He's the edge case, a platoon of emotionally pathetic soy twigs and neckbeard lardsticks probably would actually be about as good as a platoon of average women.
He's not so much overestimating the average woman as underestimating how ridiculously below average he is.
Its very slow and brooding, kinda like Batman, until the last chunk where it ramps up to overdrive until the end.
Its way too long, seemingly to try and dodge doing an origin story for Batman but still "setting him up."
First episode was good, middle episodes was a whole bunch of the penguin not being the penguin and it was relegated to second monitor occasional glances while doing other things, last episode was the penguin finally being the penguin, back to pretty good.
I really liked The Penguin but, after reading Ahaus's review, I realize that I basically skipped over all of the bits with the 'girlboss finding herself'. So: a solid 8 from me, as long as you're riding the fast-forward button.
I started watching because I heard the 4th episode was one of the most viewed/rated ever on IMDB or something and was sorely disappointed by it. That episode was nothing special, nothing that I haven't seen better realized elsewhere.
Aside from that, the series is meh. The main character acts well I suppose, but I don't care about him succeeding since he has no redeeming qualities. You don't really root for anyone, which means the show has no emotional impact.
I liked Penguin and also agree with some of the criticism about the girl boss stuff. Shame about Vincent.
This is based on the Batman universe with the negress Catwoman?
Pass.
If you're talking about Hangman (who is a woman), she's from the comic Batman: Dark Victory, which came out in 1999. It's the sequel to Batman: The Long Halloween.
And yes, she was a woman there too, though that was a plot twist at the time.
You should look at how they bastardized that comic run to make the show character, she’s the “hangman” but secretly a victim who never killed anyone and her dads an evil monster who was the real hangman ( killing only women, including her mom), set her up, locker her in Arkham and her evil patriarchal family never supported her so she kills them and takes her mothers name Gigante (her husbands name in the comic series, but girl bosses can’t have husbands or kids). You insert a bunch of female “revenge porn” and a psychologist simp lover and that’s what the story writers spent the middle episodes shoving down your throat.
Fair enough.
It was somewhat annoying but at least they didn't actually make her a girlboss. She reveled in her victim role and that's the reason why it ended the way it did.
