Thin edge of the wedge is in, especially since just like the female counter to the Space Marines is the Sisters of Battle, the Custodies had the Sisters of Silence.
Expect there to be grumbling and a decrease in game workshop sales soon. They were warned that the only thing keeping their customers was THE SETTING, certainly not most of their products and media..
I assume it is going to be slow boiling frog. We have the lore change but no female minis for a while, let people get used to the idea and then introduce more female characters and minis.

The same strategy was employed in comic books. Replacing established heroes with diversity replacements or changes was done at the fringes. They weren't going to make Superman gay, but Alan Scott? Ripe for a makeover take over.

Every time I focus on GW's stuff, I'm reminded that they're a tabletop RPG company founded back in the 1970s. How they've lasted this long, I can only attribute to sheer, unholy autism on the fans part.

If you have or get a 3D resin printer, you can make all your own models. It’s pretty pricey up front, but fairly quickly breaks even.

It did for a while, but it's been slipping for quite some time, at least as far as I know. Haven't kept super close eye on things, but that was my understanding.
It's also a big target precisely because it was gatekeeping. The locusts saw something that was resisting them, so they had to keep attacking.
I mean, the idea of people being allowed to enjoy something. Problematic.
40k has great gatekeeping from the fans on the ground who play it. Both in terms of being insane extremists and the sheer level of autism needed to actually play the game.
The company and the secondary fans who only enjoy it for the "themes" and art? Have been woke for years.
Tbh I know two people who are really into 40k and one is full blown NPC and the other is NPC lite. Both have played for years. Perhaps exceptions that don't disprove the rule.
They couldn't get in through the fandom side, due to the high costs of the miniatures. They got in through the company itself, so the rot is coming from the top now.

The only other franchise I can think of with great gate keeping is blue archive and I doubt anyone can overlook some of the more degenerate aspect of the fandom. 40k has been infiltrated for a while now the skin walkers are already in.

I wish but they already replied on the official twitter that "There's always been female Custodes" and one of the writers posted some to the effect of "They always existed but the previous boss wouldn't let us write them because there was no minis"
Another hobby that I will shelf. I got in to it late so it does not bother me as much and I will be saving a ton of money.
I'm a bit upset I've invested to much in to my black templars but it is what it is. Time to pack them and put them in the attic.
Do you have friends to play with? It seems silly to shelf them in the attic. Nu-Warhammer might be dumb as shit but that doesn't stop you and mates from playing and ignoring the new stuff.
My mates and I still play 8th edition and drink beers and Games Workshop never sees a dollar from us.
1/5th of the price? If you have the right setup it's closer to 1/64 depending on what you print. There are 1:1 Photogrammetry scans for most of the models if you know where to look or proxies that match the rest of the range.
The problem is mostly the 3D printing itself and that's from someone who printed a full 2000pts Lumineth army for Warhammer. The resins are pretty gnarly and you need to have a dedicated exhaust system or a room you don't step in because of the VOCs. The parts are also consumable (FEP films, LCD screens, etc) and you need to take apart the printers to replace them and they're not cheap.
It's a fantastic tool but it's far from threatening Game Workshop's stock, at least in its current stage.
It cooled off a while ago during 9th edition but I was still collecting miniatures waiting for the kids to grow. I really wanted to build a grey knights army, I liked the psycher vs anti-psycher + templar / medieval knight esthetics.
On the up side I get to save money.
As someone who recently got into 3D printing: I hope Games Workshop gets fucked six ways from Sunday on the plastic front.
There are so many high quality miniature modelers out there and resin printers can easily compete with and even beat the level of detail of store-bought miniatures.
Out of curiosity: are there any good comparisons to compare the quality of models 3d printed vs original?
Don't know of a direct 1:1 comparison but you could check out https://www.myminifactory.com/tribes (they sell original models and not bootleg Warhammer copies, though).
This site https://cults3d.com/en/categories/game has some more direct Warhammer clones but for obvious reasons they can't name them as such so you get names like Chonky Bug. That ones has a gallery of printed and painted versions for example.

There used to be a lot more of direct Warhammer clones on Cults but Games Workshop will shut them down as soon as they find them, so you have to do weird conversions (Primaris Marines = Prime Beef) or just grab them before they're removed.

It's amazing how often people try to force a situation from a top down or side perspective without understanding how fans make things. Before all of the SJW stuff fans made all sorts of fun stuff for their favorite things. I was in a clue that ranked you by how well you did at X Wing and Tie Fighter. Fans told stories and made movies about Star Wars and even had meet ups for that. Troops comes to mind.
The reality is, with all of the fans making stuff, good stuff comes out. It's not all good, but we can still enjoy it. Good games, movies, stories and others come from that.
Half Life is awesome, the mods made it that much better.
Anything Games Workshop makes competes with fans. Since we can design figures and print them out on our own, they have to compete against us. If they can't, they won't have fans. If we don't need them, why continue buying their stuff?
