That's at least a couple dozen fights!
Hey now, it’s very important to have 90 minutes of dialogue between every power move
Don't forget having the first 5-7 minutes recap the previous episode + intro, while the last 5-7 minutes preview the next + credits. Of a 22 minute episode.
The goku spirit bomb during the Frieza arc was basically its own season
Two episodes of footage stretched into what, seventeen?
Dragon ball z was one of the few series where the initial investment was worth it but trying to go back is a painstaking labor of love
Yeah no, I'm too old to pick that show up. It just doesn't respect your time.
I'm pretty distant from anime these days, how was the reception of Dragon Ball Z Kai? I had heard they trimmed a lot of the fluff.
Yeah but it was one of the best shows to be watching while it was airing, because you could miss an episode (because you were a kid playing outside with your friends) and tomorrow when you catch it you are still fine.
Its the antithesis of the "bomb" format people love so much these days, but its probably one of the best for airing on TV.
It was fucking awesome.
I had a bunch of friends in college that would all watch it together and "Gohan, get off the planet. I'm about to fight this dude." followed by several episodes of powering up was the pinnacle of our watching sessions.
I recall watching DBZ very early in the morning as a kid and being annoyed half the episode was intro, recap, preview outro, then almost nothing happened during the few minutes remaining.
The books themselves were fun enough.
What got me was the whole "take turns fighting the enemy one at a time" bullshit. Like, come on, there's a half dozen of you, and only one of him, gang up on him and kick his ass already!
Tournament of Power parodies this, Android 17 blasts some of the other competitors who are mid Sailor Moon transformation only for both Goku and the second top fighter from a third group scold him and tell him to let it happen.
That's why 17 won the Tournament of Power and Goku didn't. He didn't read the assignment.
Mission failed successfully!
No. One at the time.
Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Meeeeeeeeeeeeee
in the next episode....
(Preview shows "Haaaaaaaaaaaaa")
Outro
Everything past Frieza saga is non-cannon.
Fight me.
DB should have ended and died when/after Goku died.
The second time, I mean, in the Cell Games.
Torch was passed to Gohan, redemption was sort of achieved by Vegeta, Gohan's dad saw him grown up despite Gohan only being 12 at the time and his dad in this situation being Piccolo because Goku doesn't count. Power levels hadn't gone quite so crazy yet, or been nerfed to something stupid like having Krillen of all people beat an out of practice Gohan because "training".
It even could have continued after that with Gohan being a goofy idiot in his Great Saiyaman gimmick and gone back to a semi-comedy series, which is what it felt like the next saga was leading to before Buu was introduced.
Iirc that was the original plan by Toriyama. The Cell Games were the end of the series and like you said it completed Gohan's journey just as Dragon Ball completed Goku's. However the editors and money people didn't want their most lucrative franchise to end so we got the Buu Saga and everything after.
It makes sense in hindsight because that whole saga is so unfocused and goes in so many directions til about Super Buu-Kid Buu. He told the story he wanted to tell and didn't know where to go next.
IMHO Cell Saga ends the best for dragon ball, went full circle with Gohan also who I really liked. After that no thanks.
I can definitely see the argument for the Cell Saga being the conclusion, but everything within the Saiyan saga and the Frieza saga was pretty clearly leading up to a climactic showdown between the space tyrant and the legendary Super Saiyan. You mix in the planet melting down and the obvious finish is that they both die along with the planet, their fight continuing uninterrupted to the very end, bringing a conclusion to the legend.
In this episode Goku and Friza try to order lunch
I'll have theeeeeee
Tune in next time to see what he orders.
Akira toriyama: please sir just let me do my other projects, I've been doing Dragon balls for 40 years!
I miss Dr Slump, was hilarious and imho while Totiyama basically made what battle shounen are today I prefer his humor. You notice it more in early Dragon Ball and then it just gets less and less.
Will they do anything new like an alternate take on GT with an adult Pan, or is it more Goku and Virginia being Super Sand Lesbians together?
Daima, which is set to release in the Fall of this year is imo their take on GT, and the premise of it is that a demonic force de-ages everyone, including Goten, Trunks and Pan
So nothing was learned and they are going to make basically the same story involving demons and de-aged characters. GT essentially did demon dragons, demon goo [Baby], and demon robots [Super 17] along with an invasion from Hell. At least the Tournament of Power and the other Super stories were more original if downright retarded at times.
And they probably won't even take the handful of good elements from GT, like Saiyans actually having something to do with Monkeys again or that the Dragon Balls can have consequences for being used.
Because that's too creative for the modern DB team.
I mean is anyone suprised? Toriyama's protogé and Super's creator Toyotarou literally got his his start ripping off and writing Dragon Ball fanfiction.
Hell even Super is a hodgepodge of that same fanfiction. Goku Black is literally Xicor from Dragonball AF, Ultra Instinct is SSJ5, etc. Other than a few original ideas it's just fanfiction made canon.
My only surprise is how many people in the fandom itself slurp it up and toss around "this is canon/non-canon" just to protect the absolute garbage being made. When we had established "canon" for decades until Toriyama and his little clique decided they needed to put their names on it and de-canonized things just to make them slightly different.
Especially as all the parts anyone likes from Super are just ripped off from the anime itself. Such as Broly or Cooler.
To be fair, I actually looked into it a bit, the creation of “canon” content starting with the Yo Son Goku OVA happened because of Toriyama’s disgust at Evolution
Right, everything happened because of Evolution being so bad.
That doesn't justify the need to take things everyone already loved and then re-canonize them just to ruin them. Like DB Minus makes Bardock and Goku's past so much worse, but now we have to stick with it because apparently the TV Movie was just too popular.
