My mother is obsessed with Perry Mason. I discovered a channel with him on it Justice TV. Look at the roster of judges on their "courtroom" shows (media.scored.co)

If you've ever stayed home smoking weed at 2pm (hopefully this is in contrast to the rest of your days) you know how trash the TV is. Back when I could get away with this, there were some bafflingly old syndicated programs floating around and then daytime talk shows and soap operas. I suppose the court show is a bit of the last two mixed together.

The only good thing on daytime TV is a rerun of The Price Is Right.

I don't even watch it on sick days any more because other services are as readily accessible as broadcast TV. I may as well put on YouTube for something dumb.

I still have cable IPTV over Fiber, for sports, but the box likes to fail a lot, for some reason.

You should see how bad those are. Right before Christmas I was working in my living room while renovating my office. So I turned the TV on and ended up on that channel one day. It's not even court like anymore. It's basically niggas relationship drama with some wood decor around. I used to watch The People's Court when I was a kid after school. Yes I was weird. Nothing like that now.

Haha, I forgot about that. No, I wasn't that weird. I'm sure someone would put me on some sort of "spectrum" if I let them, but I've never had an obsessive personality like that. We didn't have cable for a long time, so I watched what was on and I preferred that over whatever after school kids stuff was on honestly.

Those aren’t real judges anyway but no surprise. Your mom likes a the original Perry Mason show you mean? I love it and my mom would watch the made for tv movies in the late 80s and early 90s and now they are on antenna tv. When the HBO Perry Mason came out a few years ago I was gonna give it a chance but a lady at church told me his secretary was a lesbian and I decided not to watch. I did find two of the original E Stanley Gardner books recently

I sometimes watch the old Perry Mason while eating dinner for two reasons: I want to sample shows from before my time, and because I'd rather watch it than almost any current programming.

It was before my time too but my parents watched it a lot and those made for tv movies were on as a kid

And you could do a great hard boiled detective show set in the 40s. Imagine if HBO adapted Mike Hammer without any wokeness. But HBO wouldnt want that. Not sure if you’ve ever heard of the movie devil in a blue dress with Denzel playing a private eye in 40s Los Angeles. Based on a book series by Walter Moseley from the 80s and it’s good.

You have any hope for it? I found the Maltese Falcon book at a yard sale for 50 cents. I think I have some Same Spade books

The two biggest names in "Courtroom TV" were Judy and Joe Brown.

This was a battle lost a long time ago, when people thought it was awesome and cool for a Judge to be snarky and cruel to people just because she didn't like them.

I wish we had less of this and more ACTUAL courts livestreamed including Federal, it's harder to mot reveal how much of shithead you are in court when it's broadcast live to everyone.

I just remember how much of an uptick in viewership courts were getting when livestreamers were watching them with their chat.

Be nice if that became a meta than watching copyrighted shows.

To this day when I think of court tv I think of the OJ Trial since that put them on the map

They rebranded to TruTV because Time Warner bought them out and this was during the time Time Warner was trying to ruin every channel they owned by radically altering their purpose.

They shifted CourtTV to action reality shows at the same time they turned Cartoon Network into live action shows.

The last good one anyway. I remember some guy with black hair but he was completely forgettable. (and come to think of it maybe he was a Mexican...)

Pretty sure none of these sad clowns are real judges. Allred is barely hanging on to her license to practice law.

Legally they are arbitrators. I don't even know if there is a requirement for that.

All those court shows explain that parties have elected to not go to a real small claims court and rather settle their dispute via arbitration. The upshot is that the producers pay any awards. The amount they get paid is based on the judgement (whatever remedy the judge comes up with still happens after they both get paid for appearances).

No, you don't need to be a lawyer to be an arbitrator.

This isn’t so much a dei thing, though I’m sure it’s a factor, so much as it is that trashy daytime court shows have replaced the trashy daytime talk shows of the past. It’s “you are not the father” tier shit from the only demographic that can get away with exploiting that same demographic unfortunately.

Exactly. The network wants sassy black people for the drama of it.

The third guy from the left, isn't that Larry Elder?

The only time he was a "judge" was a show called Moral Court, which ran 130 "cases" over 65 episodes.

I used to watch it. It honestly wasn't bad, as it explored moral dilemmas, such as giving away handguns as a promotion when selling new cars.

Perry Mason is a bit dry for me. I prefer Matlock.

There are similar shows outside the US and the actors are so bad and its usually the typical men did something bad to a women and she is the victim, then they call a few wittnesses with some really bad drama (often other boyfriends of the woman) and loud interjecting when they arent even supposed to talk. Then the men gets sentenced or the woman rewarded with some money. The target audience is probably old women, same like crime shows where women are often the victims. Guess its something psychological that they like that crap.
