I thought twitter crashed and burned when he fired 70% of its extremely educated, professional and valuable workforce that was necessary to run a simple service that can display 280-character messages and show ads.

No the death knell was when he started charging $8 for checkmarks. Who's gonna pay for twitter?

No wait it sank when he fired the lauded TRUST AND SAFETY TEAM who were the only ones censoring critics of the regime fighting dangerous hate speech.

Lol when the Intersectional Commisars were fired, Japanese Twitter instantly stopped being pozzed.

I recently skimmed over a news article claiming "everyone" is fleeing Twitter for threads and mastodon and whatnot. So far so doomsday for twitter.

However, after reading the actual article it turned out that "everyone" was a bunch of far-left groups, like my local equivalent of the Huff Post, WaPo and tards like that.

Losing the leftists who threw huge bawling tantrums about the Nazi hellsite and migrated to Mastodon and Bluesky (where the worst ones are congregating) was more than canceled out by normal and right wing people newly signing up for Twitter/coming back and posting without Trust and Safety people suppressing them.

Eh, there's the good and bad of it.

Bad news: People fleeing twitter are usually pedophiles that once operated with impunity on twitter, and their infestation has caused me some trouble.

Good news: It's pretty fun to threaten 'em, and hit'em with slurs and obscenities. They report my posts, only to get banned for posting actual CP on mastodon servers. They're terminally-online shitheads, so they'll often try to come back with new accounts.

Hm? Of course you can have an addiction to social media, you can get addicted to anything that produces dopamine in your brain.

Addiction to digital media is 100% real. People have destroyed their lives over addictions to certain video games, pornography, social media, and pretty much anything on the internet. hell, pretty much every game on the Android and Apple app stores are designed with addiction in mind.

I know a lot about addiction. Social media is not physically addictive, but anything can be a habit. Caffeine is physically addictive. People will say they have a workout addiction, too, but I don't think anything that delivers a natural high is an addiction. Addiction is when chemicals fool your brain into thinking it needs different stuff than normal. You're not addicted to oxygen, food, etc. Those are needs. When something substitutes itself for eating, like meth, you're addicted. When something becomes a physical need beyond the natural stuff like food and water, it's an addiction. Now, we don't always talk about medical treatments in those terms -- we don't need to -- but you can become physically dependent on medical treatment.

Stuff that makes you happy is just stuff that makes you happy. Social interaction can be disordered. When it is, we talk about it in different terms. We say someone is a narcissist, not that they're addicted to attention, except metaphorically. Typically, it's avoiding social interaction, rather than relishing it, that is disordered. That's because it's as much a need of humans as food and water. Yet the relationship between humans and interaction can be as disordered as the relationship between a bulimic and food.

OPs post wasn't about the profitability of Twitter. Twitter hasn't been profitable for most of its existence. Only in 2018 and 2019 did Twitter turn a profit. 2020 they lost more than 1b. In 2021 they lost 221 million.

People would say Twitter would die when Musk took over. It didn't. They said Twitter would die when he rebranded it X. It didn't. Actually nobody gave a shit about the new name. Twitter has been more active and relevant than ever. According to Musk in Q2 2023 Twitter had 540 million active monthly users. Can't say if that is true but it's quite likely considering it's not a censorship hellhole anymore.

See the link I provided. According to Musk Twitter has more users than ever. So what constitutes as "destroying" itself in your eyes? Profitability? Like I said it was never a profitable company and if it'll be in the future is yet to be seen. Relevancy? Twitter is more relevant than ever. Far more so than during the Trump era and during Trump it was only relevant because of Trump shitposting all day. And you don't need official numbers for that to know it's true. Just look at the current Israel shenanigans.

Meanwhile, how many alternatives that popped up have failed? Threads died in a week, bluesky will most likely die as well.

Threads was a good laugh lmao, a bunch of millennial PMCs slapping each other's backs about how nice everyone was shortly before they all died of boredom

I will always say that it wasn't a smart move. It just sounds goofy, and easily ends up being confused with the more "adult" side of things.

It's a stupid name and a clear symptom of Elon's autism. Man originally wanted to rename PayPal "X" before he got shitcanned from the company, and he named one of his bastard children gibberish with at least one "X" in it.

I don't know if he "destroyed" it, but somewhere along the way he made the site largely useless if you don't have an account by making account timelines non-chronological when you aren't logged in.

If I want to actually read what someone has posted in chronological order, I have to use nitter.

I never predicted it would cause Twitter to crash, but it still was a retarded idea and I will continue to "deadname" the site as Twitter. Unless Musk radically changes the UI and discontinues the rest of the typical jannie bullshit that's still going on, it's functionally the same social media poison.

Twatter was trash before the name change. Twatter remains trash after the name change. Never had and never will have an account there or use it.

Everything bad that happens, in fantasy or actuality, is because Musk is (evil / stupid / ???). Every move he makes is (evil / stupid / ???). The man can't so much as select what cut of steak he want without the nag patrol clucking and insulting him over it.

It's honestly like an ex-girlfriend at this point.

You know what "X" reminds me of more than anything: Discord.

I think that's a recipe for taking over the world. I didn't see it at first, but after I looked into what other platforms do, I realized.

I knew Twitter/X would be fine as Elon is a marketing genius and that's who you need in charge to keep attention on a social media platform not to mention how terminally online the left are.

My main thought was how 'X' is a dangerous thing to type in your browser if you're too dumb not to use incognito mode or delete your browsing history /s
