The best way to kill demand is to let the junkies overdose then leave them to die. They're never going to get clean in significant numbers. It would help with the crime problem as well. Then you just have to start executing drug dealers like Trump suggested to keep them from creating more addicts.

Unfortunately we are importing all the addicts from around the country / Canada / Central America into Portland due to these laws.

So no, they won't kill themselves off, they'll just be replaced by more dangerous addicts.

Duterte had the right idea. And it continues to be hilarious how many people "condemn" him for it, while he is completely unrepentant about it all and can cite the massive amount of druggies, drugs and money that his program was successful in taking care of.

I would have no issues putting in laws that make all drugs legal to own and consume at people's leisure - if we make it illegal to resuscitate overdoses.

The mad scientist in me jumps in glee at the idea of finding out what kind of bottleneck that would produce.

The Multnomah County Health Department will begin distributing tin foil and straws this month to fentanyl smokers at sites across Portland, WW has learned.

The “smoking supplies,” which also include glass pipes for smoking meth and crack as well as “snorting kits,” are part of a national effort to minimize the health consequences of drug use. Smoking is considered by many health experts a safer way of consuming hard drugs than injection, and government officials are now seeking to encourage users who haven’t already switched to do so—and to make it safer for those who already have.

Jesus Tap Dancing Fucking Christ.

The policy is brand new. Multnomah County confirmed it Thursday afternoon after WW inquired. Spokeswoman Sarah Dean noted that the rise of fentanyl, which is commonly smoked and not injected, has decreased demand for the county’s “harm reduction” services. Visits to clinics have dropped by more than 60% since 2019.

Spokeswoman? What the fuck is that term?

The smoking supplies serve two purposes, Dean says. They encourage people to stop injecting, a vector for disease. And they encourage people who are already smoking to come into clinics, where the county can offer fentanyl test strips, Narcan, a fast-acting overdose reversal drug, and other services. “Several decades of research have also shown that providing supplies for safer drug use does not increase illegal drug use,” she adds.

Such unbelievable bullshit, how can anyone believe this?

Despite the county’s efforts, however, overdose deaths have continued to climb. They’ve doubled in Multnomah County between 2018 and 2021, thanks to the rise of fentanyl. (Data for 2022 is still trickling in.)

DOUBLED. DOUBLED!

Mayor Ted Wheeler, meanwhile, has taken a different tack. He recently announced, but later withdrew, a proposal to ban the smoking of fentanyl in Portland’s public spaces.

After initially declining to comment, the mayor’s office releasing a scathing statement.

“I adamantly oppose distributing paraphernalia to encourage using a drug that is the leading cause of death for Americans under 50 and responsible for 190 fatal overdoses a day in the U.S.,” Wheeler said. “This misguided approach also results in greater risk to public safety for those who simply want to enjoy our city without walking through a cloud of toxic smoke.” (County health officials say that fentanyl smoke puts passersby “at very low risk of health effects.”)

How amusing.

Citations would have been really nice here as this is quite the claim, and as the replication crisis in many scientific fields is widely reported, a look under the hood helps fortify her position.

County health officials say that fentanyl smoke puts passersby “at very low risk of health effects.

Interesting, interesting. Why are cigarette smokers in America essentially treated like second class citizens again? Surely there would be similar second hand smoke effects from fentanyl exposure?

The NIH basically went crazy a few months ago trying to prove that secondhand fentanyl smoke is harmless. You can find a few studies but they all disagree with each other, however amazingly they all came to the same conclusion that it is TOTALLY HARMLESS.

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised given how badly they fucked up COVID studies and research, but it is amazing to watch them all claim it to be totally healthy while the drug itself is the 'worst drug in existence.'

It is the "citation needed", "magical thinking" and "whores in lab coats" memes all ground up and cooked together, smoked off some tinfoil then blown back into your face.

Trust the science, my ass.

Worse, surely, like the difference between a toxic waste fire and a chemical weapon attack. With cigarettes you're worried about lung and mouth cancers, infections of the respiratory tract, etc. Nobody smokes a cigarette and keels over on the spot.

Is getting stabbed by a junky not a serious health effect?

  1. Taxpayer funded distribution of drug paraphernalia begins

Was it ever not taxpayer funded?

  1. It's worrisome how involved they're getting in this process. They don't directly involve themselves to "minimize the health consequences of" binge drinking, overeating, self-harm, or other addictions. It has become all too clear that they want a dependent, stoned population to control.

Yeah I'm kinda surprised it wasn't before this. Ottawa has been handing out needles for some time.

This is much different, that fell under 'health and safety' this is actively campaigning for people to smoke fentanyl publicly by giving them whatever they want.

Smoking it in public can cause serious health effects just from the secondhand smoke.

Not to mention having drug addicts around, which is dangerous as well.

One can only hope this creates a doom loop that eventually brings these cities back to reality, but I suspect that will be several generations.

Why do you think so many places suddenly did a 180 on pot? Its not like the government suddenly became "cool" and just let people have it because they really wanted it.

Giving out straws to normal people is against the law, but giving out straws to junkies is fine?

They should be distributing 9 millimeters into their brains instead.

Druggies are the worst, it's like a human termite infestation eating away at the foundations of society. We kill pest infestations, and that's just what these people are.
