A Black and Japanese teenager in Japan was pulled away from his classmates during his graduation ceremony because he showed up with cornrows, according to local reports.

Hes about as “black” as Colin Kaepernick with hair that is remarkably not “black”.

The episode has prompted a debate about Japan’s notoriously strict school rules, known as burakku kousoku, as well as discriminatory actions against racial minorities in a country with a 98 percent ethnic Japanese population.

Having strict standards applied universally is not “discrimination against minorities”

“I was surprised to see a response similar to the old U.S. racial segregation policy of ‘separate but equal.’ Why do you have to worry about the hairstyle? It’s a graduation ceremony,” Yuichiro Tamaki, leader of the opposition Democratic Party for the People, tweeted. He added that Japan needs to be better at accepting diversity in education.

Hilarious fake argument with no basis

Hair is heavily regulated as well, with some schools demanding photographic proof that a pupil’s locks aren’t naturally black and straight. One school went so far as to edit a student’s yearbook photos so her brown hair would appear darker.

In other words the kid did this intentionally to be a pain

Motoki Sugiyama, a former middle school teacher, said Japan takes for granted that the majority is Buddhist, black-haired, heterosexual and Japanese by ancestry. That’s why there’s limited understanding of other cultures, an issue that’s reflected in how schools deal with non-Japanese pupils, he said.

How dare Japan keep their culture

Reflecting on the incident, the graduate told Mainichi Shimbun: “This hairstyle is part of my father’s roots and is my culture as a Black man.”

Go to inner city Baltimore and tell them how black you are before they rob you faggot.

No, you live in Japan. Your culture is Japanese. Don't like it, leave.

ngl being half Japanese is gonna be hard.

You might be better off in the USA. At least people here are conditioned to treat races equally.

Of course it's a black father. I will be really surprised if he is around still.

Is segregation bad again? I could swear that it was only last year that it was considered progressive.

It’s bad that Japanese school didn’t embrace multiculturalism for a half black student who intentionally tried causing an issue. It’s progressive when the “minority” demands to have their own ceremony because they’re special.

It's against the rules and he knew damn well it was. It's not like those rules are some secret amongst Japanese students. Hell, I bet a lot of them don't like the rules.

he knew damn well it was.

He absolutely did know, that's why he waited until graduation when there would be basically nothing they could do about it.

Muh raicism is the troyan horse, this is the end game:

More schools are also offering genderless uniforms to respect pupils’ gender diversity and sexual identity.

I hate the antichrist

Here is a lesson for that kid….. when in Rome do as Romans do. Also as someone who worked in HR I recommend a very conservative look when you go for an interview. Even as a teen is wear a tie to a McDonald’s interview because my mom drilled it into my head to look very professional at interviews no matter the company.

They ban any type of hair changes, to include ponytails, which is referenced in the article

Hasn't Pikame talked about getting shouted at for "dying her hair", because she didn't have black hair like everyone else, and her mom having to come in and explain that it's her natural hair color. That's how strict they are, anyone graduating should know that.

I mean, it's Japan. What did you think was going to happen? It was not based on his race, but on his hairstyle.

This may be an unpopular opinion here, but the hair thing in Japanese schools - which also effects Japs with a fraction of European DNA in them and a fractionally lighter hair colour - will have have to change if they keep letting foreigners in. You can't generate friction around an innate genetic characteristic and not expect people to get pissed off, so if you don't want them getting pissed off, drop the rule, or don't let them in.

That said, cornrows look like shit and I'm not surprised they didn't want him shitting up the graduation photos and making it look like their school has a thug culture brewing in it.

Japan is 98% Japanese. If that falls to even 95%, there will be changes.

There is no country on earth that let a significant foreign population in without something changing to accommodate them. Japan is not an exception to that. They will halt foreign immigration or they will bend. Either or.

Their internalized whatever about their hair they think means they get to tell us what to do. Literally, you ask why black students should get some rights over others. They say it's because their hair is different. You say well chop it off. They say it's a magic part of their blackness.

They are super sensitive about their hair because no one likes it. But we're the ones that are supposed to internalize and do something with that.
