"Keith Wann, though an amazing ASL performer, is not a black person and therefore should not be representing Lion King,” she declared
I mean, at least it's so mask-off they actually can't form a strong legal defense around it. It's the same justification for why Beverly Wilkins was fired from a Historically Black College. She got $4.8 million
Yeah these are some STUPID people to publicly announce that.
That is how entitled and protected they feel though, they feel like they can literally announce they are doing something illegal and nothing will happen to them.
facial expressions serve three fundamental roles in sign languages, to convey the emotion that tone and volume would, to add grammar (raised eyebrows turn it into a type of question, lowered into a different one for example) and as a 'phonological parameter': Just as we in english add voicing to change the word 'fat' to 'vat' (the first sound is the same, but for the larynx engaging, look at it in the mirror as you whisper it or a recording with the volume off), so too can lip patterns change the meaning of words in that way. Therefore, to use an unflatering photo is unfair even beyond what the papers do to politicians as they talk. Facial expressions are core to his job, in order to actually communicate he has to make many faces. Think of a signer's face as basically a 3rd hand, and is doing as much word as the hands almost to change and add meaning to what is being signed.
Theatre interpreting is 99% of the time a passion project that is effectively paid well under minimum wage. Yes this looks like a $1000 payday, what you don't see is the 10x the time spent prepping and rehearsing and getting timing right and thinking about how to translate songs and figurative language. This is not a job for a newbie level 4 interpreter, they'd need help from an experienced level 3. Lot of training to do this well. This $1000 is very much the exception on the high end because it's one of the biggest shows, on a Sunday, on the 25th anniversary special. This is as good as it gets, 10x better than usual I'd say (but then I've not got experience anywhere near Broadway).
As it's a passion project, this is normally done as a quasi volunteer thing. The interpreters with a passion and love for theatre do it, while others do it as a one-off project. It is paid well below minimum wage so few do it, fewer still do it more than once. Looking at this guy's bio he is, as expected, a performer himself. So he's been doing this for the love of it.
I can guarantee this is causing waves and drama in the area. Its a very small community.
Do actual deaf people get any enjoyment from it though? Or is it just for smug lefties to look at and nod approvingly about how "inclusive" they are being?
It’s not that there’s 0 deaf people who enjoy it. But it isn’t all that popular I will admit. Who it is actually more popular with in my expierience (in a bumfuck nowhere city) is the language learners, interpreting students and interpreters themselves. Last one I went to had 5x-10x as many of them as actual Deaf people. It is a great opportunity to see some really good interpreting. Rehearsed stuff that has been thought about and made more artful, rather than the usual immediate live style, where the best they’ve done is a bit of Wikipedia research the night prior on the broad topic they were given.
And in a roundabout way that then serves the deaf community indirectly. You’ve got a more engaged cohort of future interpreters seeing something at the peak of their field, in optimal conditions, it’s the goal of what to aspire to in many ways.
But yes, the theatre lefties don’t know or care about any of that, it’s more about the ‘inclusion’ there absolutely.
The interpreters aren't there to benefit deaf people, who rarely if ever will be in the audience.
They're there simply as one of the ways the production can virtue signal. The point of the virtue signal is to reassure believers that this is an ideological safe space.
Bc anything counter to the programming causes them extreme pain - that's where the hate comes from. Which is why virtue signaling is so important to them - they need to know the pain won't kick in before they go anywhere or do anything.
They need to be reassured that nothing wrongthink will happen. Seeing the interpreters there makes them feel safe.
If they're vampires, then the virtue signal is like a sigil on the door that let's them know the room has been searched for garlic and found clear. They need it in order to be able to relax.
If they wanted to help deaf people, they would rather just stop the brainwashing and the degeneracy.
Where do you think deaf people are better off; in tight knit and homogenous societies like Denmark or Hungary - low on crime and high on solidarity where their family, friends, and neighbors care for them.
Or a postmodern metropolitan dystopia ridden with crime and filth where the cult of inclusion and diversity spreads fear and distrust and no one feels safe and everyone is in the constant grip of anxiety,
alone and isolated,
overworked and exploited,
depressed and suffering,
slowly turning humans into shameless, psychopatic, hedonistic animals with debauchery and narcissism the only comforts the progressive cult celebrates, the only respite the programming allows,
until they're completely engulfed and controlled by the brainslugs, their imagination extinguished by the virus they've been infected with through the constant propaganda, afraid to think, afraid their thoughts will accidentally betray them and trigger the punitive shocks of pain,
feeling only cowering, every answer to everything memorized and nothing new under the sun, bleakness, darkness, mistrust, alienation, the party before everything and everyone,
feeling no purpose besides consuming and no vision besides consuming more,
their senses dulled and dimmed from having to believe that nothing is true,
aesthetically barren from having to pretend that whatever the brainvirus is producing, and only that, is good - they turn everything into the same; their buildings, fonts, designs, expressions, music, everything bland and boring and devoid of essence just like themselves, everything ugly, everything disgusting - they gather in their hellscapes and twerk and screech and celebrate the destruction of all standards, and all that was once seen as good by the cultures they conquered and are about to extinguish, reveling in the only true joy they know; the joy of humiliating and dominating and torturing their enemies and watching them suffer,
their only goal a future where individuals can live by their whims, driven solely by their desires, with no constraints, no shame, no guilt, where they can consume the maximum all the time, with no responsibilities, with no ties, no loyalty, no community, just individuals fucking and consuming, with no discrimination, no choice, just fucking and consuming anything and everything and everyone in a constant orgy of drugs and sex and Star Wars sequels, forever and ever in eternity,
self-hating from creeping doubt, from the suffering caused, kept in check and suppressed with constant righteous rage and anger, the eternal revolutionary mindset, never relaxed, always in fight or flight, always seething with hatred for the enemy,
their souls dead when having to fake belonging to groups that despise them for their race, gender, or both, and will never accept them as equals,
their souls wretched when belonging to the chosen race or gender and having to believe that the others are ghoulish monsters and they themselves gods,
and their minds blank from the constant hypocrisy and mental dissonance they must maintain to function, mentally exhausted from all the contradictions they have to support.
What do you think? The deaf would rather have skin color accurate translators, or they'd rather not live in hell?
The interpreters aren't there to benefit deaf people, who rarely if ever will be in the audience.
They're there simply as one of the ways the production can virtue signal. The point of the virtue signal is to reassure believers that this is an ideological safe space.
Bingo. There's no reason for TV broadcasts to have some idiot waving their hands around and making faces while taking up 30% of the screen. There's already closed captioning to accomplish that without being a complete distraction to what's actually being said.
Born-deaf literacy rates are abysmal. 90% of them cannot use closed captioning. In an emergency it is the only way to communicate to them.
(I am all for self-responsibility and they absolutely have the responsibility to try to learn literacy still as adults, but there are fundamental issues in schools and medicine that are fucking them over, hard, they are now out of the schooling environment and with 10 years of full time catch-up to do)
I hope they won. Start using the courts against these people. You can’t fire someone simply for being white. At least you shouldn’t be able to. Let them get sued so they learn their lesson
Plays have sign language guys now? That would be kind of distracting, and wouldn't the deaf have to choose between looking at the guy, and looking at what's going on on stage without the guy being distracting for everyone else?
Why not just go the high-tech route, and let the deaf download an app that gives them the dialogue that way? As long as they keep the sound down re: notifications, I can't see a problem with making an exception on the no-phones rules they must have.
Why not just go the high-tech route, and let the deaf download an app that gives them the dialogue that way? As long as they keep the sound down re: notifications, I can't see a problem with making an exception on the no-phones rules they must have.
Deaf literacy for about 90% of people born deaf plateaus at around the grade 3-4 area, just as they swap from learning to read, to reading to learn. Functionally illiterate. And plays tend to use quite flowery poetic metaphorical language, far more advanced in complexity than many deaf people are able to handle with those levels of literacy.
I'm all for self-determination and independant learning, and it is absolutely their responsibility to try to fix these issues in their adulthood. But they have absolutely been let down by the education system and so captions cannot work, they were fucked over and have 10 years of learning (while not being in a learning environment) to catch up with, there's some allowence there.
How is that even possible? I get that school would be hard and shit, but wouldn’t one expect deaf people to naturally gravitate toward reading and writing?
This is very hotly debated. So what I'm about to say is more theoretical, but here is my take.
The way reading and writing is taught is an accessory to spoken language, at a far later age than they are spoken to. Literacy is taught using the building blocks and foundation of having spoken language, and it is taught using spoken language. It is not the primary form of the language. Nobody is going around with a whiteboard and marker (or fingerspelling) and using that to communicate to the child 24/7. In a different world, purely theoretically, you could teach that early literacy yes, but nobody does it. Even the kids who are exposed to literacy early aren't exactly immersed in it in the same way we immerse them in spoken language. You need spoken language first in our world, and then through that literacy is taught.
There are also what are termed 'critical periods'. If you don't meet certain milestones by particular ages, it essentially creates permanent damage/reorganisation in the brain. A baby's brain is very flexible, but things get set in stone and it becomes MUCH harder to learn a language if they aren't doing certain things by age 3 (soft cap) and severe damage by age 5 or 6 (the harder cap). This applies both to learning your native language, and any second language, but with different milestones and critical periods...
Deaf kids miss those milestones all the fucking time.
The 3rd big issue (this one is my soapbox) is that the signing deaf education is fucking shite, and serves as a reject room in most places, for all the ones who don't cut it in auditory-verbal/oral education which drags them all down. The parents usually opt for trying oral first, and then resort to signing years later only once they are failing badly and drop out. So basically we have these kids who weren't exposed to as much language as they should have been early on and will basically always struggle to learn language as a result, and are failing in their attempts to learn to 'hear', lipread and speak. So they drop out and get sent over to the signing class as a backup. Best option for that particular kid at that time sure, but its a fucking disaster for the rest of the class. They now have another kid with a load of behavioral problems (not being able to effectively communicate causes all sorts of behavioural issues), and who is well behind the others, with basically no language. The one kid in that class who knows the language well because they have deaf parents, they have that understanding of language and no issues learning them in theory but for their deafness, is basically put in charge of teaching them the language. And they go on like this for another few months, settle in, before another drop out from the oral class is put in the signing one. The class therefore never progresses and is always being disrupted. It's also then being taught at that low level, and working on foundational stuff to catch people up, which can't be done effectively given how old the kids are, so the few students that would be fine in theory are still stuck in a shitty class that isn't at their level. Imagine trying to teach in a situation where they're all already behind and you keep getting thrown a behavioural nightmare who has 0 language every few months. You'd get nothing done.
And so these issues compound and make each other worse. The 3rd isn't really spoken about in the literature, but it absolutely is an issue you see when you look at the real world and how these programs are run.
I think a white person doing sign language is better.. just saying. A white person doing sign language, its easier to distinguish details of the hands to figure out the sign. Mostly the different shadows from lighting. While a black person, its harder to see what their fingers are doing because the shadows blend.
I remember thinking something similar the other day when I saw a black female officer directing traffic. She wasn't wearing those white gloves either, since these days nobody wants to correctly wear uniforms or hats or do anything proper. It was extremely difficult to see which direction see was pointing from a distance.
Before the race grifter movement got so large that it became the cultural behemoth that it is now, I would have supported getting rid of the white guy, because he would be out of place. It follows the same principle of casting black actors for historically white roles.
But now, we all know that it's only one-sided and nothing more than anti-white bigotry. This is just another example of the rampant racism against white people that is openly celebrated by the MSM.
ASL is an abomination that should be disposed of in public places and official functions. The fact that a plurality of deaf people are functionally illiterate is a strike against it, not a mark in its favor.
Let him do it with in cacky clothes and pithhelmet if people are worried about accuracy. For fuck's sake, it's animals, not people! Even before this racist shit, replacing him was fucking stupid, he was a teleprompter, not part of the cast.
I actually agree. Keep Europe white, keep Africa African, keep Asia Asian, and so forth. If this were a play of Mulan I'd want everyone to be Chinese. If it were Frozen I'd want everyone to be Scandinavian. Cultures and ethnicities must be preserved, lest humanity devolve into a generic brown ooze whose only culture is Marvel and Tik Tok.
However, I will say that the ideal situation here would be for everyone to be African, not "black". Hiring a bunch of black people from Baltimore to play African characters is borderline minstrelsy. Either go authentic or don't. Skin color does not equal authenticity.
It is interesting since africa is like 1/4 light brown on the north side like libya, tunisia or morroco.
But they probably dont identify as african and also progressives dont classify them as africans either. Otherwise, wed have to pay them reparations too for slavery lol.
One thing to keep societies homogenous. Completely another thing to suggest that a culture can't enjoy, or learn from, or perform the art of another culture.
And then what, we have to import blacks to put up a Nigerian play?
China has to import whites to put up Shakespeare?
It should be 100% acceptable to perform a play and hire the best local people for the job, with no consideration of their race.
That's fine when taken in good faith, but "race blind casting" is exclusively an avenue for replacing white people in practice. Entertainment will always be full of subversives and their useful idiots, so the fewer excuses you give them to destroy white culture, the better.
You see black Anne Boleyn, black Vikings, and black medieval British people, but you never the opposite. This is not a coincidence.
Personally if I as much as suspect that the woke have had any influence then I avoid it, for instance any black female actor is a good indicator since I still haven't seen one who actually can act and isn't there just to pad a stat, or any race swapping, or feminist propaganda.

So Lion King on Broadway is against diversity. Got it.
Cat Hamlet is apparently some central piece of black culture.
Let's ask Kimba the white lion and Osamu Tezuka how they feel about this.

if i was deaf, i don't even think I would have the motivation to go see a play. Its like taking a blind guy to an art museum
There is nothing African-American about the Lion King.
I think a white person doing sign language is better.. just saying. A white person doing sign language, its easier to distinguish details of the hands to figure out the sign. Is Lisa Carling black? If not, she should realize that she could be next.
And yet the same people will whine that some a show set in or inspired by medieval England doesn’t have sufficient diversity.

No white guy is ever "out of place" in a nation founded and built by white guys
If being "out of place" is your criteria then there shouldn't be an ASL interpreter standing around at all.
ASL is an abomination that should be disposed of in public places and official functions. The fact that a plurality of deaf people are functionally illiterate is a strike against it, not a mark in its favor.
Excellent point.
