The interpreters aren't there to benefit deaf people, who rarely if ever will be in the audience.
They're there simply as one of the ways the production can virtue signal. The point of the virtue signal is to reassure believers that this is an ideological safe space.
Bingo. There's no reason for TV broadcasts to have some idiot waving their hands around and making faces while taking up 30% of the screen. There's already closed captioning to accomplish that without being a complete distraction to what's actually being said.
Born-deaf literacy rates are abysmal. 90% of them cannot use closed captioning. In an emergency it is the only way to communicate to them.
(I am all for self-responsibility and they absolutely have the responsibility to try to learn literacy still as adults, but there are fundamental issues in schools and medicine that are fucking them over, hard, they are now out of the schooling environment and with 10 years of full time catch-up to do)
