"How the Far Right Borrowed Its Online Moves From Gamers" -- how does it feel to be part of one of the most significant events of the 21st century, still living rent free EIGHT YEARS later? (archive.ph)

Catch up quick: Gamergate, in 2014, pitted some male gamers against the leaders of a movement to make video games more inclusive of women. As part of the conflict, online mobs deployed techniques and tactics that were later taken up by the Trumpist right, including the use of memes, false allegations and coordinated harassment.

The projection is always hilarious

It really was significant, though everything else, all the scheming they attribute to us, is projection on their part. What made it significant was the proglodyte meltdown of being told "no." We are all living in the shadow of a radioactive cultural cloud of the burning reactor pit that is post-Gamergate leftism.

What made it significant was that the outrage and letters sent by core gamergate got lots of traction with pro ad-agencies and brand managers.

Gaming was a safe, brand friendly way to advertise to a core demographic: Men between 25 and 45 with high disposable income of all political persuasions. After GG Gaming was politically fraught and advertising in one space or another could absolutely damage a brand.

This lead to advertisers asking for a lot more control over where their advertising was being shown; and the advertisers cut out all gaming advertising until things settled down and they understood what was going on.

Yep! This was the Adpocilypse. It completely gutted "native advertising" on YouTube, which was worth hundreds of millions to the market. I am sure about two AAA games flopped because of this.

The knock on effects of the permanent change in the advertising rate for the entire gaming press has sunk two major gaming publishing empires, and slashed the wages of all the gaming writers.

The Gaming Press got together and told gamers how much they hate us; Gamers responded by ending hundreds of millions of dollars of gaming publications.

It left a mark.

Rent free motherfuckers, rent free. We were the first ones to tell them no so they're going to blame us every time someone tells them no for the rest of their miserable lives. It's a weird combination of hilarious and pathetic.

“More inclusive of female gamers”. There have been female gamers since the beginning. Just not as many as the male gamers and that is a horrible thing I guess. And I’m so tired of explaining what gamergate actually was.

Remember when articles about gaming were actually about gaming? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Remember when articles about gaming were actually about gaming?

Nah, because before they were woke they were just straight up bought and paid for. Not that they aren't now, but it was far more obvious then.

Maybe it’s because I was young but I enjoyed PlayStation magazine and Nintendo power.

They were enjoyable in plenty ways. Especially as the culture of the time was about hyping and making everything the greatest thing ever, so they were hit after hit of dopamine.

But they were still owned by Sony and Nintendo, so you weren't getting anything but a marketing pitch disguised as articles and reviews. Something that can be fun still and even somewhat informative, but always doing so to sell it to you.

Can’t argue with that. But I’d take that over what we have now. Now what was really fun were they late 90s/early 00s gaming forums or any nerd forum back then to discuss different games.

Women game even more than men do, they just exclusively play The Sims and match 3 puzzle games.

It's hilarious that they're letting a white male speak for female "gamers". Does he keep his penis in a jar like John Flynt?

The left took an L at that time and will never forgive white male gamers for as long as they live.

Its always funny because I was there during the start of GG, and every day was a constant whine fest of "we don't wannaaaaaa do that, it'll make us look like we aren't still Leftists! If we are associated with anyone Right it'll tank us!!!!"

It took years, and Milo's abuse of his labels to make them feel like they were still being Progressive, for the Mostly Left Wing GG to even begin to recognize the Right wasn't the pure evil they had been screaming their whole life. And it still had huge pushback, like KIA1 trying to ban all T_D posters.

New Fags don't realize how libtarded early GG actually was. It funded a radical feminist game jam, respected tranny pronouns and was generally pro-trans, etc.

It was really insufferable having to explain over and over "no this didn't just magically appear from nothing, these groups and types have always been doing this." So many seemed unable to understand that something like feminism could have ever been wrong until it attacked them.

And its not like it ever got better. By the time KIA2 kicked off, they were still promoting every tranny or minority they could find who supported them. Sophia Narwhal was basically a god and took the entire front page for months.

Liana Kerzner got a lot of promotion. Her whole schtick was "everything really is sexist and racist, but I'll tell you why Anita Sarkeesian is a grifter (and also here's my cleavage)."

It may have become a seasonal occasion. Depending on results from the midterms elections, we may have heaping plates for Gamesdropping this November.

These people will be babbling about gamergate and chuds to the attendants in the nursing homes they're living in 50 years from now. Some things are just psionic land mines for certain people and once you trip them, your brain shatters and never recovers.

How else can they remain on the right side of history?

There's a certain irony to that phrase...potentially memeworthy...
