I have no idea why this movie is getting a pass from so many people, Critical Drinker and RLM included. It is comically bad and decidedly feminist. I get that expectations are depressingly low these days, but this turd doesn’t deserve nearly so much acclaim.
I was just thinking the other day how far our expectations have fallen.... from regular people to critics, we often rate a modern movie FAR HIGHER than it deserves, because of how shit we expect movies to be in general now.
Vanilla Sky was a fairly amazing, well written, cerebral movie released in 2001 but critics & audiences hated it. Nowadays it’s sorta a cult classic, but back then it was shit on because it had decent competition. If that movie was released now, it’d get all the accolades. You can say the same about numerous movies from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s.
Same with Jordan Peele’s shitty horror movies. They suck… but because they have this air of pretentious ‘art’ and it’s a Black guy making them, critics adore. It’s a sad state of affairs.
I loved Vanilla Sky. And you are right. Frequently I’ll watch a b movie from the 80s or 90s or some made for TV movie I had forgotten about and it’s brilliant by comparison to a lot we get today. A lot of entertainment today is so obsessed with representation or “the message”. Agree about Jordan Peele. I thought get out was way overrated but I guess I’m in the minority. I kinda feel like if he could a just write stories and shut up about race all the time he would be better. But like you said he is what critics love so he will always get praise. Same thing with female directors
This is definitely true of things like Top Gun as well. People are hungry for something new and good, and are willing to settle for decent.
Its probably a "broken clock is right twice a day" thing but I really enjoyed CODA, the best picture winner. It is a bit formulaic, yes, but it did a magnificent job of showing that family dynamic of "we hate each other sometimes, but we sacrifice for each other without (much) resentment" -- characters are fully fleshed out, even the mother who could have very easily teetered into "dumb jealous bimbo."
I hope that some day we look back on the Marvel Age and see it as the wasteland of originality that it really and truly was.
RLM liking it surprises you? They've been woke libtard faggots for years, if not the entire time. In the previous 'predator' movie they refused to even say 'retarded' and ranted about the word even being used.
Predator movies are a cursed franchise. 9 times out of 10 you are better off passing it, which is frustrating, because Predators are so cool.. how could it possibly be bad?
I think drinker has a very selective big time payola grift with the studios. He'll hilariously pan most of their stuff but every now and then he'll probably take a big payday to go easy on one.
Plus he's a writer. I expect him to announce that one of his works is being made into a movie by one of the studios he pretends to pan.
He's actually friends with some industry insiders, and he knows that they watch him, so there's an "access media"-esque relationship there. Not quite flattery but he'll give them a pass sometimes. I don't know that he's on the take. What you said about a book to movie option is much more likely.
Having actually seen it, it's not a terrible movie. It's watchable, but it's also not that great. It's merely okay. There were a few parts that had some plot armor, and a few where the main character had to prove herself, but failed (Like not being able to take out the mountain lion and had to be saved by another of the tribe, her brother I think.)
I think the movie's biggest issue is that it exists because Danny Glover killed a predator in Predator 2, and he was rewarded with a handgun that had either 1715 or 1725 engraved on it I can't remember which. It was a nod to the audience signifying that the predators had been around for centuries looking for game to kill here on earth. It was a little throwaway piece of info that got turned into a movie no one asked for.
I haven't seen the movie, but it can't be as bad as prey the game. That game was so garbage that even the wokest sdgq people were mocking the ever-living shit out of it for being incomplete.
It's one of my favorite games. I think there's a lot of subtlety in the world and details in the branching story that most players miss, which is typical for Arkane games. I don't know or care what SDGQ said but what did you hate about it? I know Razorfist hates it too but wasn't sure why.
And I assume you're talking about Prey 2017. The original Prey was very well received.
I'm referring to the most recent PC adaptation that was so full of bugs/glitches that with no skill someone could beat the game in under an hour. If I remember right sgdq was pissed off at the people who presented it, as they thought it'd be extremely entertaining when all it ended up being was 90% out of bounds glitches and one cutscene skip that moves you from 25% of the way through the game to the final 20%.
The movie is set in the 1700s, with a “female Comanche” warrior… something that simply DIDN’T EXIST and was so anachronistic that no one can take the claim seriously.
Seriously, Comanche warriors were brutal… they would constantly kidnap and rape women and children from other tribes and White colonizers, with no mercy, they didn’t give a single fuck. You think Comanches would let a female go around acting the way the one in this movie does?
I don't think that's what he's saying- it's not the worst example of woke, it's the most complete. Any one aspect of it might not be the most egregious ever produced by Hollywood, but it has a bit of everything wrong with how Hollywood produces [current year] movies.
Just because something is "everything" doesn't make it the utmost of everything. A buffet is not a 5-star Michelin meal.
And yes, you're misstating the viewpoint. You're the one saying that he's saying it's extreme, it's the utmost. Again, nobody said that but you. Nobody said in any way that this movie is the worst, just that it's exemplar.
You should really slow down with the aggressive sassiness, and actually try to listen to what's being said. Nobody likes a bitchy wrong person.
Anytime they title something that, and its very common to do so, its a signal that they are going to use this as a jumping off point to rant about the industry as a whole.
Its clickbait garbage, but at least its telling you that its not going to be just a review.

lol, remember Black Panther was rated 97/100 while being a generic Marvel movie because "black guy" as you say
Meanwhile fantastic films like Old Henry and Vengeance slip through the cracks, ignored by everyone.

Vanilla Sky wouldn't get accolades today. Something about virtual sex bots of your crush and whatnot.

Jack will remember your comment, and call you an istaphobe on twitter later.

The bar has been set so low for them that this is a step above it. I mean, I'm sure next to Star Trek Picard, Prey is like a masterpiece.
Critical Drinker was pretty soft on it but I think he has just been beaten down and he no longer has any expectations.
When all you do is review the latest mainstream releases back to back, it eventually taints your entire view and expectations.
It’s a bad movie with a stupid ending.
Like how Nerdrotic called it “Dances With Plot Armor”

Nobody said "epitome" but you. You might be disagreeing because first you Kathy Newman-ned the viewpoint.
"So what you're saying is..."
The movie is a lobster?
Calm down, bud. You're fucking this up.

did you watch it?
yes. His point was valid.
Moviemakers have no idea what they are making movies about because they come from a privileged LA life.
Anytime they title something that, and its very common to do so, its a signal that they are going to use this as a jumping off point to rant about the industry as a whole.
