Notch shouldnt have sold to them. He should have tried to sell to nintendo instead. They may be scummy when it comes to copyright, but at least they arent blatantly evil.

I completely agree. Mojang is now owned by one of the biggest (if not the biggest) software developers/producers on the planet, and it hasn't done anything to improve the development of the game compared to when Notch was in charge aside from (perhaps) improving code quality. Major releases are now (mostly) annual as opposed to "when the feature(s) is/are ready" (which was often more frequent than annual before, as I recall), and it seems like only about every other major version releases anything that's really worth it. I feel like there's a decent niche market for someone that wants to clone the game on a more stable and performant codebase and add some features that Mojang/Microsoft aren't interested in (and I'm sure it's been tried, along with the variety of similar games that have been released.)

I've heard that 1.19 stratifies the overworld's underground in a way that loses the feel of the original. Arguably, this is evidence of MS Mojang losing the plot.

It's more fun to experience risk at Lava layer and find all the shit you need than to stratify out the gold and iron from each other, and force diamonds behind cave walls so you can't get them easily.

Yeah, caves honestly just feel empty now. The strength of minecraft was not in it's "realism (which minecraft seems to be pushing with these caving updates), but with its absurdity.

it is not what they are known for

There just wasn't a high enough interest level to support those efforts before. Now Microsoft has created the motivation.

$2.5B actually. In cash.

The thing is, the game keeps on generating cash so long as its well managed, so you could easily make over the money you get from selling it.

And how long will it take for your game to generate $2.5B? Will it be guaranteed to generate $2.5B? Are you 100% sure it'll sell forever?

Microsoft gave him $2.5B straight to the bank account, all of which can be used to generate even more money via funds and shit.

They will just provoke hackers to break it and the hackers will end up winning. Sick of all this software control and moderation though, it's like every day something else coming out to take away control from your own things.

True, minecraft is swarming with mostly harmless hackers, and I cant imagine places like 2B2T will be happy with this.

A wonderfully salient example of why no one should sell their life's work out to managerial elites of any brand if it has proven to be valuable.

I get what you're saying, and agree to some extent, but if you do decide to sell, the outcome of your life's work is the billions you get. That's not nothing. It's a shame to see your work shat all over, but it's not like you got nothing, it's not like you gave it away.

I get the impression that this is being done client-side, so the problem may not be detecting or communicating with a private LAN server; it could be the clients themselves being able to communicate over the Internet with Microsoft's servers.

I would be surprised if the system went through the server at all. There's a separate online component for verifying accounts and downloading skins/capes, so that's what you'd need to circumvent. That was possible way back in the day, but I have no idea if you can still do that.

If it's a 1.19 'feature', then they'll just never update to that until they find a way to circumvent it.

MS has been horrible for a long time. Why people keep putting up with it I have no idea. Even though Linux isn't the best it beats supporting the sh*tshow that MS is.

Players will be pissed that they will have to install java mods to play Minecraft online if they offend Microsoft or some rouge server owner slanders them.

Minecraft has had a good ban system since before it was officially released. Servers could ban by UserID or IP, and I'm aware of at least one plugin that (among other features) allowed servers to join a ban pool and ban players that had been banned on other servers. This is a centralized ban system that is completely inappropriate for a game like Minecraft where servers are hosted independently. Different servers are going to have different rules to accommodate different age ranges, and most people will adjust their behavior to remain within those rules. Now if someone goes on an 18+ anarchy server and calls for the extermination of the Jews villagers (in Minecraft™) they can be banned from playing on any online servers.

It isn't any business of Microsoft's to tell users what they can or cannot do on servers they do not own or run, and using the excuse that "it's for the children" doesn't make it any more appropriate. The responsibility of ensuring that children are not exposed to inappropriate content falls onto their caretakers,, not Microsoft. If Microsoft wants to add an opt-in parental controls feature I'm fine with that, but not this system.

Good servers don't allow little kids.

I knew you'd somehow hamster your way into defending Microsoft again. That you chose pretending to give a shit about children as your methodology is especially hilarious.

The big deal is it's not Microsoft's server. We're talking about private servers. Owner sets the house rules, not Microsoft. I was going to put a clever analogy to other products here but why bother. If you claim not to understand why this is a problem, you're lying.

And as someone who hangs out here you must know they aren't going to stop at "adult content". In fact I'm sure they'll allow content many parents find objectionable for kids. They certainly wont ban rainbow flags for pride month.
