There have been multiple black actors in the recent Star Wars shows, and there was no pushback. Their roles were fairly well received.
The reason some people are upset is obvious: They quite reasonably expect Obi-Wan Kenobi to be the main character and primary focus of a series named Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Disney is taking a page directly out of the 2016 Ghostbusters playbook here by shouting "sexism" and "racism." Oddly enough that script was leaked too, and there was speculation that it was done intentionally to generate controversy and therefore interest in that movie. Can't help but wonder if that's the case here.
Not to mention that back in the day, fans were generally thrilled that Billy Dee Williams was joining the cast in Empire Strikes Back, and he was heavily promoted as being a heartthrob in teen mags like Tiger Beat (iirc, he made centrefold.)

You mean you're not looking forward to seeing Reva's story unfold in a series which is titularly about a completely different character who has been around for half a century? You bigot!
Shouting racism and sexism has been Disney's defense against criticism of their film has been their MO for a while now. I remember they tried to imply racism towards anyone who gave Black Panther a bad review.
They just finished a show called Book of Boba Fett where Fett himself is a background character in the show half the time.
Indeed. I have to suspect that part of the reason that wasn't more heavily criticized was that it involved existing characters rather than OCs. And it's worth noting that even lefty rags criticized that show for it.
I bet we won't see them criticize Disney for doing the exact same thing this time, though.
That's Disney's entire MO for saving worthless shows. Just shove Ahsoka in it, or some other cult popular character.
As if the fact that someone in this massive galaxy, we still only see the same couple dozen people ceases to be a criticism if its not a normie popular character.

I believe it wasn't more heavily critizised because nobody cared about the show after they saw first few episodes. I reckon nobody gave a shit anymore when they relegated Boba to supporting-character.
At this point, it is abundantly clear that Disney has a literal written policy that all future television shows and movies, even those ostensibly centered on legacy characters, must focus on the establishment and promotion of new minority characters. The bait and switch is just too transparent and predictable for it to be anything other than official guideline.
I wonder if it lends credos to the idea that anytime they show the original heros' that Disney needs to pay Lucas money.
Because Disney has gone out of their way to purposely release nothing that is a follow up to Luke, Leia, and Han and specifically forcing new characters into the mix.
As far as I know, Lucas sold Star Wars entirely. Regardless, the Star Wars and Marvel story groups, as well as the Disney executives, are 100% ideologically converged. They don’t need financial motivations to inject wokeism into their purchased IP. Indeed, they appear to value ideology over money, although such stances are markedly easier in the age of ESG.
What are they going to do now to attract an audience?
"y'all be raciss for not liking my shnizzle" is NOT a marketing strategy nor a way to build or promote a brand.
I mean, obviously Empire Strikes Back was a total flop because racist white people didn't want to see the black man in that movie betray Han.
No... wait... Star Wars was a flop because racists hated the black man, Darth Vader, in that movie. (hurr durr, Darth Vader is white cultural appropriation!)
There's an interesting corollary to this - There's been a push in art/architecture for years to build ugly pieces of art under the guise of "minimalism" or "brutalism" but it's obvious that you have hacks being paid to do subpar art (see also the Obama presidential portrait) but there's another school of thought that this has been an influence of marxism to destroy the concept of art and beauty in the western world and keep it all subverted. Same thing coming to movies and TV now?
People don't like her because she's a race baiting cunt. Not because she's black. People didn't object to Samuel Jackson, because he's a legitimate good human being.
At this point nobody but an NPC can deny that Disney pulled a bait and switch again here. Nice of them to admit, but it's too bad that too many people will still just go along with it.
Defensive tone of the introduction of a new character that Kafka-traps you into either liking, accepting, or at the very least never negatively criticizing the new Mary Sue, err, Jedi? They seem confident in this.

Every time a black person isn't on screen, all the other characters should be asking, "Where's Poochie?"
Maybe Disney should have named the show correctly. This is not "resistance", it is "dissimulation".
Haven't watched it, but I'm guessing from the tweet that it's more "Reva's story" than "Obi-Wan's story". Yeah, that's gonna piss off some fans.
Good fucking luck with that groomer Disney. Fuck you.
OK, Groomer
Double dog dare you to tweet this out in Mandarin.
Why the hell is she wearing a straightjacket? B... based?
This cringe being put out so late in the window tells Me Obi Wans streaming numbers are already bad
Resist what, arrest?
Now, let's see the Chinese version
Who are also the same ones pandering to them. It's called having no moral compass or character or ethics.
I don't dislike black actors, I dislike the shitty woke garbage scripts that hollywood has them perform.
These things are largely inseparable at this point. A minority or female lead is a gigantic red flag in today’s media.
At some point, when you keep being a good doggie and heeling for a master, you don't get to be the victim.
They eat happily from this pie, milk it until it bites them in the ass, then whine about it.
They're out of legacy stories.

ugliness is beauty.
freedom is slavery.
Not buying your shit or spending money on your parks and merchandise.
Resist that.

I have been waiting for this series for a long time, I knew expectations weren't high but they didn't have to bring a sheboon to ruin it this hard

Who's watching this shit at this point?
Darth Wakanda
So fucking gay
nobody gives a shit
They already know that Darth Dindu is not going to be well received, unlike Mace Windu.
