I have to suspect that part of the reason that wasn't more heavily criticized was that it involved existing characters rather than OCs

I believe it wasn't more heavily critizised because nobody cared about the show after they saw first few episodes. I reckon nobody gave a shit anymore when they relegated Boba to supporting-character.
