There was a school board meeting where one of the board members was going on about reading test scores being low and blaming them on parents not reading to their kids, which is some "wet streets cause rain" type thinking. So we're doomed to eternal clown shows of people blaming everything when no problem even exists.
There's a minutephysics video on Simpson's Paradox that I'm actually a little shocked he hasn't taken down. He shows some education test scores for Texas and Wisconsin. Graphing just the test scores showed Texas with significantly worse scores. Then he showed them broken out by race and for every race Texas had better test scores for any given race. He then repeated the crimestop mantra "socio economic factors."
Oh, and another example, merit based immigration. The offspring of parents regress to the mean, which means smart parents have children that are smarter than average but less smart on average than their parents. Same thing for dumbs. The upshot of this is if Country A has an average IQ of 100 and Country B has an average IQ of 85, if A imports everyone from B with an IQ of over 115 all that will be accomplished in a few generations is to lower the average IQ of both countries.

I don't know if there's something I'm just not understanding here, but I don't see how it's possible to have higher scores in every subcategory without having higher scores in the combined category.

Average Hispanic score: 80
Wisconsin Average: 96
