I had a roommate who played this game. Specifically, she was a whore in the game. This is how she paid her part of the rent. She wasn't shy about it, and she wasn't very good looking either. I don't think she'd have made as much in meat space.
Pretty much only came out of her room to eat, shower, or visit her son. Yes, that much of a winner, didn't have custody of her son despite being the mother and in a leftist state. I have no idea what she did to create that situation, but always speculated it was her choice so that she could spend more time in second life.

If you're talking about the visual quality, it could be a valid tradeoff - it's better to have Pixar-level graphics running smoothly with long draw distances than photorealism that can't be processed fast enough to not be nauseating. Gorn's a cartoony game, but it's apparently good enough to trick your brain when experienced in VR.
There's also the fact that any photorealism is always fighting a losing battle against uncanny valley. The issue is not the case with anything stylized.
I've never tried it but the devices I've seen are not serious enough to not be just a gimmick. Maybe in the future it'll be real but not right now.
Wow, what a complete clusterfuck of a project this will be. It'll be the Big Dig of the internet. But lots of money will be raised, acquired, redistributed, and eventually funneled into off-shore accounts. In a decade we'll all get the launch of the Metaverse, a $3 billion version of Pong.
