I think part of it is (or was) trying to present a more “western acceptable” image for the Olympics, like pulling certain manga from konbini shelves. Which is bad in itself, but not necessarily indicative of long-term meddling.
But I also think that the excuse that the Olympics offers is being used as a starting point to force more changes. I find it hard to believe that it’s coincidence that new fan work guidelines were released for Evangelion and for Nier with some similar wording within a couple weeks of each other despite both properties being completely unrelated.
Something is up, and it’s not a natural cultural shift.
The media there is definitely leftist but the public doesn't trust shit over there BUT then young folks worship western celebs and anything American so it was probably some idiot college kid. Which is weird considering how they vote....looked at the petition, saw a lot of comments from westerners using terrible Japanese.
