I thought it was ruined by difficulty. I remember having several rivalries in the previous game, enemies who'd beaten me several times, who I had come to remember, and was anxiously waiting to see them again to try and finally get a win against them. When you finally found them and beat them it was so satisfying. That never happened in the new game, which essentially ruined the core of the game for me.
