It's been a while, but most of the pretentiousness seens deliberate, since two of the main characters ARE pretentious. Their dad's just some regular guy, and he's regularly shown being more sensible than them.
I think it's partly how detached we are from the struggle of life. Nothing seems like a real threat so social validation is all that matters. This nonsense mainly seems to get big in comfortable societies, and among the demos that are more likely to at least be middle class.
