I remember a friend of my co-worker got mad at me because I said the little mermaid movie was a stupid casting she was like well the director said she blew away the competition. She didn’t believe me when I said they were set on a non white lead. Plus these race swaps have the same routine of media shills going to work for the studio.

She definitely blew something.

And a mermaid needing melanin is even less logical than a black Norse god.

Or a black Kryptonian who derives power from absorbing sunlight.

Actually that makes more sense, since black reflects less visible light than white does.

But still, I don't think the casting directors were worried about accurate physics.

In physics, sure, but biologically melanin is natural sunblock. It's why blacks get vitamin D deficiency and brittle bones the further north they move, where the sun's rays aren't as intense as at the equator.

If Kryptonian DNA is somehow empowered by solar radiation instead of denatured/destroyed by it, they would be fair-skinned to absorb as much sunlight as possible.

It does happen to redheads an awful lot, considering how few redheads there are in the source materials and redheads are literally going extinct.

Even before they started replacing them, the entertainment industry had a lot of hatred for redheads.

Whcih is odd because in literature red heads are more common than in real life. I'm a mixed ginger btw.

Maybe they used to be more common. Maybe they've been genocided by the usual suspects the same way all other whites have. Red-headed women are uniquely beautiful in a way they could never be or even imitate. That might have something to do with it.

If you know your history, you know why redheads are less common. My mom was sad when all her siblings who passed, did. But she pointed out when they were redheads.

What's funny is the Kingpin one ended up with one of the best castings possible, someone with both the correct body and presence to portray the character that few could, even if it was the wrong color. It was a case where the standard "best for the job" excuse could be valid.

But as is usually the case, they did it so often and so hard that it got lumped in with the poisoned well and now its part of an inexcusable trend that can have no exceptions made for it. For however many "true believers" are in their ranks, they contributed to making racism worse in their attempts to do the opposite.

Jackson as Fury was also great, it wasn't until the script quality dropped so low in later phases that he couldn't overcome it.

That only happened because when Marvel wrote/drew the 1610 Ultimate universe comics Fury was drawn looking like Samuel L Jackson without permission, so he had them over a barrel legally and more or less gave himself the MCU job rather than sue Marvel.

My only issue with Jackson Fury is he has now completely dominated the character, meaning literally any Nick Fury we see anymore will be his version and no other. And not dominated in the "well why would you want a lesser other version" but simply become the culturally expected version to a point where if you used his decades old original version people would complain.

And I liked the older one much more than "I'm black and I'm angry" that makes up his entire version (and acting career).

There have been a few times when it worked, I liked lady Starbuck in BSG and MIC was pretty good as Kingpin in Affleck Daredevil and SLJ was great as Fury until the last phase or so. "Black girl magic!"

Problem is it happens a lot, and not like there's always or even often this great actor who does an amazing performance.

The weirdest one is Kang. If you are a super intelligent time traveling being that can change your appearance at will, why be a nigger? If you're a nigger, why don't you go back and change history so your species isn't the most backward, hated species in history?

I'm not the only one in this thread that enjoyed him in that roll.

I'm about to explain something to you, and I can't recall the vocabulary word. Fair warning, and I sincerely apologize. There's a way movies bring forward information on characters without doing the world building or character development. That's by using an actor that already has that movie history in their previous films. It has a name, and it's been done a lot more lately than when we were younger.

When you see people like The Rock always being the same character, or Ryan Renalds. Sometimes it's done intentionally. Film buffs would know the vocabulary word. I just learned about it, thought it was an interesting method, and moved on. But, think of Samual L. Jackson's character in XXX. It's not just type casting. Sometimes it's done intentionally using the technique I cant think of the vocabulary word for.

I watched Gunslingers last week, and the best part of the movie for me was watching Nicolas Cage be a completely not NC character. I was disappointed in the ending of that movie. Spoiler for whiners. A town full of outlaws should have kicked more ass. But, it wasn't the same tired movie. Still would recommend the watch!

Fatigue is the problem. Black replacement is done so much in all of media that even when it is executed well like what you are saying, everyone is already so jaded from the fatigue that it tarnishes any good one. Every damn commercial, poster, ad, etc… has some “well to do” black portrayed as something that the majority of all people know is an extremely rare exception to the norm.

I feel glad I don't watch anything with ads.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– I_Miss_Imp 4 points 215 days ago +4 / -0

Even that doesn’t insulate you from being exposed to it everywhere. Any retail shopping posters, public transport, etc… just like the ads all over Europe like “ stop sexual assault” or “stop pick pockets” and it’s always shown as a poor innocent black girl on the tube being accosted by a group of white men leering.

▲ 1 ▼
– Michalusmichalus 1 point 215 days ago +1 / -0

But, I am insulated. When people talk about a commercial, I have to look it up if I care. When people complain about diversity gone wrong, I just don't care enough to look. ( If you look up too many ads, your feed will be ads. I'm just lazy to looking up ads in incognito mode)

Maybe you are digitally insulated as you described, but I was more talking about even out in the physical world. Physical printed posters or billboards all over have the same themes in their messages. I don’t know you or your routines so maybe you don’t ever venture out into retail stores or go anywhere outside of your home, but all I’m saying is it’s infected almost every corporate Marketing strategy across all mediums. Stay strong brother.

What's crazier about making Josie black is that one of the pussycats was already black and I'm sure they didn't swap her out for a red head...

Yup. That said, I'll give them Nick Fury, and I'm not convinced that his character was an agenda-based race swap. Samuel L Jackson was typecast well, and at the time everybody liked him. Within the MCU confines, he played it well, and until about Endgame, was written well. Some of their other choices however good for the roles were a little risky, like Robert Downey Jr.. Jackson was a big known star, had played basically that rile over and over again, wasn't a has-been or TV actor (no shade from me, but the first half dozen new Marvel movies were clearly designed and cast for blockbuster star power advertising), and had no image issues. That he made more than most of us will in a lifetime just saying, "motherfucker," was his worst image problem, before TDS took over social media.

Most of the race swaps have some significant other problems, like the way the characters are written, them or the writers shitting on the historical character instances, being DEI-hire actors or actresses, having fake media hype for them, that doesn't translate into tickets or streamimg subscriptions, etc..
