They don't ask "will others be OK with me thinking this?" They ask "is what he is saying on the approved list? that would make him an approved person to inform me because I am retarded."
"Higher status" men usually know their own worth, whether in success, charisma or just straight physical strength, so they can more readily parse who is and isn't worth listening to and keep the list short enough that their beliefs can solidify into confidence.
