The story, as far as I've been able to piece together is, the local channels refused the air his show. So many that they had no choice but to pull the show or have dead air. The local stations and affiliates are the ones who got this ball rolling. The rest just turned it into an avalanche.
When you have Brian Stelter on CNN saying that ABC got spooked once Nexstar joined Sinclair in taking Kimmel off the Air - cause people complained to them in the past 24h (60 out of 200 broadcast stations) and likely other broadcast stations started to weigh in, then you know it was bad.
Rest was advertisers making calls to Disney that they will also be pulling out if he isn't fired, especially since Kimmel's apology was him doubling down and potentially/probably getting them sued.
Then the FCC made some noise, advertisers got even more weary of running ads on the show, so they had no choice but to pull the show.
