Maybe it's time we face that "just wanting to play vidya and watch anime" made us more of the problem than we'd like to admit (youtu.be)

I think the thing that this avoids is there isn't much INSPIRATIONAL or REFLECTIVE escapism, especially domestically made in the West.

Anime at least still has the 'blessing of Abe' so a lot of the work reinforces families and traditional values as they want more babies.

But a lot of Western escapism is made either for easy gratification or reinforcing leftist ideology. Thankfully due to other options, those once great sources of escapism (star wars/trek, doctor who) are failing into irrelevancy. THAT is the bigger poison, insuring nothing to inspire to be or make you want to reflect on yourself.

They're actively killing our modern myths, which destroys our morale. We try to find new sources of cultural health to increase our morale, which in effect leads to the constant search for escapism and fantasy.

It's like we're fleeing a wildfire of cultural destruction and have gotten addicted to running.

Exactly, this is key. It isn't that all escapism is bad, it's that we largely don't have aspirational storytelling anymore, so there's no positive Western escapism.

Anime at least still has the 'blessing of Abe' so a lot of the work reinforces families and traditional values as they want more babies.

Exactly why I switched almost exclusively to anime for visual entertainment. I didn't want to be a weeb, it was forced one me by shit Western slop. It's absolutely ridiculous that you can barely find the heroic journey in Western entertainment anymore. That's an utter embarrassment.

But, as you said, at least Western entertainment isn't the only game in town...yet. They'd definitely like it to be, and the locusts are trying their best, as they always do.

Escapism of the past was myth and legend, and it inspired men to greatness. Nowadays it's more advertising than anything else.

Myths and legends weren't escapism per se. They are abatractions of reality. If anything, greek myths were cautionary tales, for the most part

Ehhh, yes and no.

They were cautionary tales about the ills of man. Basically, be temperate in your ambition.

Almost all of the stories about ambition based on foreboding oracle prophecies were about not overreaching.

Classics like The Odyssey and The Iliad were -- despite having cautionary aspects -- still very aspirational, about life, love, family and fame. Achilles and Odysseus are still two very popular and heroic figures that many men find aspirational given their drive, their goals, and their resilience, despite their flaws. That was usually the ebb and flow of the Greek tragedies.

Sophocles' tales were a bit more dire, but still dipped into heroism and the necessity of ambition for man to become what he was meant to be (even if the tales had tragic endings).

If we go by just the mediums of games and anime, there are maybe half a dozen "legendary masterpieces" per decade that inspire people and are remembered and still consumed in the future, while the hundreds to thousands of "okay" to outright garbage pieces were left mostly forgotten by memory and history. And that's just stuff in our direct lifetime, in a century or less they will be truly lost to time by being too milquetoast for anyone to bother cataloguing their existence outside one line indexes.

Given that humans don't change much, I'd say the escapism of the past that escaped the annals of history would be the legendary and mythic ones because of how powerful and timeless. Not that they were all that existed.

Ironically, modern media is so shit and openly hostile this is what is inspiring people to act against it.

Reminder not even leftists like modern media (for the most part), they just like when they subvert a franchise. For them, it isn't even about escapism, is about implementing communism through totalitarianism and magical thinking

Ahh yes, the old id rather sit in a old chair in a small room playing video games all day versus having money to go on vacations or even gas money to drive anywhere.

One of my biggest dreams was to visit the pyramids of giza, spoiler, its never going to happen.

I normally really like afterskool productions but this is just such a cheap cop out. To blame the individual, and not society that shapes them.

I actually even agree, but its not video games.

Its school.

At 16, people were having familys, becoming knights/soldiers etc. Its always the young people who seem to want to change the world.

What do we do now, we force people to sit in class and learn until their 18 where they are usually forced to learn for another 4 years or 8 or longer if you want to be a "true" professional.

By the time youve been through all that, you no longer want to change the world, you just want to do your shitty little routines that youve become accustomed to.

Seems to be intentional I think.

It's absolutely intentional. Why do you think endless "entertainment" is now free (meaning, the product-)

Most modern "education" is a scam.

The reason American high school is called secondary education is originally, you would learn all the essential skills (including finance and things we currently teach in college) in 8 years. That would leave high school for college prep (including languages such as Greek and Latin) for those who were planning on going to college, or for what could be considered apprentice work.

Now they have college programs for the trades... that do nothing for the person taking the courses.

I thought the clear takeaway from the last decade was that "I just want to grill" is the vanguard of communists and their bankster masters.

The only types of people who still value grilling are people on this forum concerned with Qataris and James Lindsay types. All of whom, conspicuously, have the same employer, who has a vested interest in keeping people asleep.

I saw a Walmart commercial the other day that made me think that they've managed to subvert the BBQ as well.

It was essentially a short clip of a soyboy, beta White husband type alone pushing a shopping cart (maybe containing a new BBQ box?) who unsolicitedly gets greeted by a dumpy, mystery meat bluevested middle-aged woman employee with a "There’s nothing better than having a BBQ".

The juxtaposition of the soyboy husband buying consumer goods and goyslop food from Wallyworld vs the more classic images of more masculine cultural figures like Hank Hill or Tony Soprano and the themes around grilling meat for family and friends just a few decades ago.

It also hit me with the irony of some box store wagie declaring how great BBQing is on holidays and weekends while physically stuck in the deadend retail environment that probably has them scheduled to work those times they'd be BBQing anyway.

I've also seen a lot of "Keeping Up With The Joneses" advertising targeted more at women surrounding back patios and grills from outfits like Wayfair, Walmart and hardware stores.

Where the marketing is all about being envious of your neighbor's backyard setup, so you rush out and buy entire sets yourself to show off for status.

The marketing is more of an interior decorating/accessorizing focus surrounding the BBQ rather than any Hank Hill one that has anything to do with the grill specs themselves.

It was a mindset born of a bunch of faulty assumptions. One of the biggest was "they just want attention, deny them of it and they will shrivel and die."

Which works on children, and even clickbait advertisers, so it was a valid first thought but that was obviously not going to work on people with huge mysterious backings nor people with massive fanbases of soybois who'd throw money at them for saying anything.

But people clung to it because it allowed them to not have to work, to avoid any responsibility, and morally justify "ignore it until it blows over" laziness.

Exactly. I used to read left wing news everyday. It was clear they hated me for being male and Christian and looked down on me for being black. I find it hard to believe it wasn't purposeful ignorance on the part of the GG crowd to avoid addressing the left

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 7 ▼
– Adamrises 7 points 1 year ago +7 / -0

Of course it was purposeful. Most of GG was Leftists, they bragged about it constantly. All the beliefs and problems of the Left that led to us being where we are were things they supported and believed in, but it was being "abused" by "far left extremists" and hurting them so it was bad right now.

Yes but no. There are "ignore the obvious transgressions leftists are engaging in" type actors, but keep in mind marxists' modus operandi is politicing the private. When a leftist tries to make a game about troons, pocs or women you should them them to fuck off and mock them, that's how you gatekeep.

When marxists already infiltrated fandom is when you have to push against them, because they'll tell you their propaganda activism isn't political

– Sneak_King 5 points 1 year ago +5 / -0

But "I just want to play vidya" isn't gatekeeping. Gatekeeping is active hostility to outsiders, as you described. "Leave me alone so I can masturbate" is the opposite of that.

I don't have any self-control and can't indulge in escapism or any of my own hobbies without becoming consumed by them and giving all of my free time over to them, and if I can't do it then neither can you AND THAT MAKES YOU THE PROBLEM!

That's just walking in to a bar and shouting that at every patron in there. Plenty of people can demonstrably enjoy things in moderation, even to the benefit of their general wellbeing.

And yet gamers have been the biggest roadblock to the globalist agenda, more than more "social" hobbies like sports. The mix of antisocialness and problem solving helped us more than hurt.

Hence the journoïd agitating for companies to go censor speech they don't tolerate, force platforms like mutiplayer games with chats, Twitter, Discord... to adopt leftist ideology baked into Terms of Use and speech codes.

I have witnessed a wokie ragequit game chat because he met disgreement on trooning kids and anti-White hiring discrimination.

Usually they get the people who disagreed with them banned or sent to re-education. When they can't, they rage-quit.

He was a carricature of the ''Leftists don't understand why people disagree with them so they can't win an argument outside their hugbox''.

Gamers refuse too often to be their hugbox. Let's keep making them ''feel unsafe'' by arguing for saving our peoples and countries.

The majority of people saying that were the "former Lefties" or even "still Liberal but hate extremists" Lefties in our ranks.

As in, they didn't disagree with most of the problems to begin with and just hated that the "Woke Extremists" and "Far Left SJWs" were taking it too far and making them look bad.

There is such a thing as ''pathological escapism'' ( your hobby consumes you to the point you can't have normal occupations and social relations ).

Just don't become a sort of Anita Sarkeesian moralizing nagger, like the Left making itself stink so much more and more people can't stand it ( which helped the right convince people to reconsider leftist ideas ).
