If it isn't the big portion sizes that Americans eat that is the problem, then why do Asian Americans have much lower rates of obesity despite living in the same country? (media.kotakuinaction2.win)

You retards do realize that our over-processed shit is designed specifically to get you to eat more of it too, right? It's low quality and large portions. And they're related.

I'm not talking just about the desirability of the food, but also how satisfying the food is. Good home cooked food makes you full. Garbage fast food leave you hungry an hour later.

I'm not saying it's the only way to gain weight. I'm saying the addictive nature of mass market fast food and snacks is a contributing factor in why America's fat.

Everyone here knows that. But we're discussing why there's a problem. Awful self-control is another contributing issue. And, yeah, people are to blame. But also if you look around, a whole lot of marketing and social pressure is designed to exploit and exacerbate that.

Binge viewing, FOMO marketing, gambling being quietly slid into everything, excess dressed up as "self-care," etc. It's all intended to normalize impulsiveness and conspicuous consumption. Marketing switched from praising the product to leveraging the consumers' flaws.

Lmao bro, you act like your personally being attacked.

If you dont understand they have spent billions and decades to research what makes animals crave food. Your not paying attention.

Junk food is high in sugar, fat, and salt because those are the three things that really make a mammals brain drip endorphins, for some reason.

But it has no nutrition, because its highly processed and most of the nutrition has been stripped out when it was prepared in the factory. Potato chips are a good example of that, literally zero nutrition but so much fat sugar and salt. Of course you eat a ton of this shit, your still gonna be hungry because you never got the shit your body needs!

They have known about this since at least the 70's which is why I laugh everytime I see people blaming someone "for not eating less" when all this junk is designed to make you eat more and more of it.

https://lsa.umich.edu/psych/news-events/all-news/faculty-news/how-food-corporations-manipulate-you-into-eating-more-junk-food.html

Fellow junk food eaters can undoubtedly attest to the feeling of craving more, even when one thinks they have finished eating. Whether sweet, salty, or savory, junk food is a food of habit and repetition, compelling us to just have one more bite.

There are, of course, evolutionary reasons that we crave these kinds of simple flavors, embodied in sweets or fatty, salty foods. But there is also a more sinister element to our nation's junk food addiction: food manufacturers are manipulating our minds and bodies — spending millions of dollars over decades to engineer food that tastes good, but not good enough to make us stop eating. In addition, they play off of our own evolution as a species to help us develop dependencies on foods even when we know eating them is not in our best interest.

. . .

"When we taste something and when those nutrients hit our gut, there are signals in the brain — pleasurable signals — that make us think, 'This is really delicious! I like this a lot!'" explains Dr. Alexandra DiFeliceantonio from Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carillon. "That's probably due to a class of chemicals called opioids."

. . .

In addition to these opioids, the body also releases a neurochemical called dopamine, which DiFeliceantonio compared to a "tag," figuratively poking your body and saying, "'Oh, go do that again! That's something that you should eat again. That's something that you should go do.' It has to do with motivation and with learning, and both these signals are really important for our behavior."

In and of itself, there is nothing inherently sinister about this aspect of human neurochemistry. Indeed, the same signals that make a person crave cotton candy or a Big Mac could in theory also draw them toward a crunch carrot, juicy orange or tender strip of lean turkey. Yet according to Dr. Nicole Avena, an assistant professor of neuroscience at Mount Sinai Medical School and a visiting professor of health psychology at Princeton University, there are important differences in how the brain responds to highly-processed junk foods versus how it processes something like a banana or grilled flounder.

"It seems that foods with added sugars are 'enjoyed' differently, as our brain seems to be more sensitive to higher amounts of sugar than we would typically see in nature (like, for example, in an apple)," Avena wrote to Salon. This is evidenced, among other things, by the contrasting ways in which humans eat the highly-processed, chemical-laden foods and the ways in which they eat those that appear in nature.

"People are not experiencing this with things like beans, baked chicken breasts and fruit, even if they really like them," Dr. Ashley Gearhardt, an associate professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan, told Salon. To illustrate her point, Gearhardt turned to one of her own favorite foods: Watermelon.

"I love watermelon, it's delicious, but nobody sits down and eats the whole watermelon," Gearhardt observed. The difference between a watermelon and something processed by a large company is that, for the latter, those foods are altered in ways to make them literally irresistible. This happens when companies use a combination of salt, sugar and fat to create foods that overstimulate the taste buds — and yet are designed to never quite leave you feeling satisfied. Even though saturating foods in salt, sugar and fat fuels the obesity epidemic — and does not necessarily provide consumers with the best culinary experience — it guarantees that customers will keep coming back for more by overstimulating one's feeling of taste pleasure in exactly the right ways. Since the companies' view their foremost responsibility as being to their shareholders, that is in itself a good enough reason to continue preparing foods with excessive salt, sugar and fat.

All the time i hear, fat people bla bla bla.

Never ever do I hear someone saying, I wish the fda or other governmental agencys would do their fucking job!

For that matter, why do they all have brown eyes and straight black hair? What's up with that? Clearly it's because Americans eat too much or smth.

They have brown and black hair because of genetics.

But their low obesity rates has nothing to do with genetics , its to do with the smaller portion sizes that they eat.

Seriously why is it so hard for people to admit that eating too much is bad?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 17 ▼
– Kaarous 17 points 1 year ago +17 / -0

its to do with the low portion sizes that they eat.

No, that is what has to do with the fact that they're all friggin tiny. Because their race went through thousands of year of malnutrition and adapted to that reality.

But their low obesity rates has nothing to do with genetics

Metabolic rates are heavily influenced by genetics.

Seriously why is it so hard for people to admit that eating too much is bad?

No one has a problem with admitting that.

We have a problem with you ignoring the content of the food.

I don't ignore the content of the food. I simply point out that Asian Americans live in the same country and eat the same food as other Americans and yet have much lower rates of obesity than other races in America. No i don't accept the "its just their genetics" arguement. i believe they simply eat less.

Yes, you have been doing nothing but that for both threads.

Uh huh.

and eat the same food

They don't, it's that simple. Your average Asian family eats much, much more homecooked meals than the rest of the nation on the whole.

Meaning they aren't consuming nearly as much overprocessed poison.

i believe they simply eat less.

This is you ignoring the content of the food again.

Going through thousands of years of malnutrition doesn't make you less likely to being obese, in fact its more likely to make you more prone to being obese easily because the body would be trained to retain fat in order to keep going longer for when there's no food around.

Yes it does. They evolved to be smaller, more compact, smaller breasts, weaker bones, everything.

That's why they are little. That's why your average Korean man is the size of a child. Because their entire race subsisted on about 900 calories a day for three millennia.

The Guardian made an entire article saying that the reason Indians have a diabetes problem is because of the 31 famines that happened under British rule which turned them "starvation-adapted" by developing a tendency to generate and store fat instead of burning it off.

While the Guardian was just blaming White people as usual, the idea that going through famine would make people more prone to obesity because the body would want to store fat more, makes more sense than the idea that going through famine would make people less prone to obesity.

I’ll reiterate this again. “Obesity” is measure by height/weight to create what they call a BMI. It’s a very archaic measurement that has literally every fit person with muscle listed as obese, I had to be taped for “obesity” every year in the military because I was 6’1 225 and the adjusted bmi had me at 7% body fat. Asians are hilariously short, and have next to zero muscle mass compared to any other race. This makes Asians “skinny fats” where the majority will pass a height/weight measurement, but not a neck/ waist measurement.

If you look at type 2 diabetes rates non hispanic whites are the LOWEST demographic at ~7% where everyone else is 11% or higher. If you look at morbid obesity rates it’s a 2:1 ratio of female to male.

permalink save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– The_Shadow_of_Intent 3 points 364 days ago +3 / -0

The Asian American rate was 9%. But Indians were counted as Asians in that survey, and their rate of type 2 diabetes is 2-3 times the rate of East Asians like Koreans.

So actual Asians came in very low for type 2 diabetes.

Insulting me isn't answering my question. What do you think is the reason other races are fat?

If i was being a weeb i would say its genetic which is what you seem to be trying to imply yourself. But i don't think its genetic, i think its the fact that Asians just eat a lot smaller amounts compared to others which is why their obesity rates are lower. Which means others are eating too much. And America has a high obesity rate because Americans eat too much. Why is it so hard to hear that you are just eating too much? Is it that hard for you to just cut down on your food?

Easy - niggers have something called "infinite free food" EBT, so they just gobble it up because their sanctuary cities provide more. They have no concept of the value of food and the understanding of moderate eating simply does not exist for them. Of course, the few black people who figure out that the hyper-processed slop they're served is leading them into a deadlock of obesity are harangued for ignoring "soul food" and "dey culcha" for the 'white man'.

As u/kaarous told you in the other thread (and really, do we need two threads on this? Do we even need one?) it’s because in Japan they aren’t eating hyper-processed chemical poisons anywhere near as frequently as in America. Have you been following the shit with “MAHA” and the broader food-additive discussion? That’s probably 80% of the problem, with the rest being exercise and genetics

You haven't answered my question. Why do Asian Americans have lower obesity rates? They don't live in Japan, they live in America yet their obesity rates are much lower than other races.

If you knew anything about Asian Americans you’d know they don’t shop at the same grocery stores as us. You’d also know they have cultural traditions that they (atleast the older, immigrant generations) tend to keep up even when they move here, such as cooking/snacking habits (making everything for themselves and buying less premade trash) and exercise habits (e.g. an hour of tai chi every morning - some might scoff but that’s an hour more of physical exertion than the average American (especially the elderly) is getting)

Asian grocery stores are full of processed foods and an incredible level of sodium. Yes, there is rice, meat, and produce - just like any grocery store. The catch is you need to prepare and eat those instead of that family size bag of frozen dumplings in your cart.

Asian grocery stores still import food from the closest place to them because its conveniant so the difference isn't much. You can go to one and ask them where they get their vegetables and meat from . And like i said. That is exactly my point. Its a lifestyle thing and they eat less than others.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 6 ▼

its the difference in the amount of hyper-processed garbage eaten

but they get their vegetables and meat from the same source

You can’t be serious dude…

Its a lifestyle thing and they eat less than others.

Sure, like I said, I put it around 80-20. Your analysis neglects metabolism and genetics entirely however. But at some point your “lifestyle choice” of drinking an extra large soda at each of your 5 daily meals ceases to be a “lifestyle choice” and instead becomes something more like a “societally-mediated mental illness”. The asian societies, even the ones here, for whatever reason, don’t put up with fat fucks (as much).

I don’t think your posts necessarily deserved the response they received, but honestly who the fuck cares what some fat faggot on reddit posted? If you must, there are places like c/ShitRedditSays dedicated to such faggotry

These levels of obesity did not exist in previous generations, it only surfaced in the nineties when crap like margarine and HFC was proliferated. There is your proximate cause.

I have some relevant experience here. They put some shit in fast food that suppresses your ability to feel full. I'd swear to it in court. Let me explain.

Working all the time and running a business, I ate fast food pretty much every day for years. During that time a "healthier meal" was eating at a real restaurant and getting like, fajitas. I had a voracious appetite. My standard McDonalds order was a large Big Mac combo plus two double cheeseburgers plus 2 McChickens. And I would eat all that garbage and still feel like I could eat 2 more doubles afterward. Everywhere was like that. Then I moved and had a nice kitchen, and was going through some rough spots and started cooking again to save money. Except the portions were different. I could cook an 8oz steak and put a couple spoonfuls of potato salad on a slice of bread and be full. Literally 1/4 or less of the portion, and not only was it good I was stuffed afterward.

After eating like that for ~6 months the boss ordered delivery at the business one day and I got my usual McD's order and it was disgusting. The taste, the texture, everything about it was wrong. I tried out other places and it was the same everywhere except for Wendy's and like, rice-heavy Taco Bell items. I think they use real food in their shit and not whatever is going into other fast food. But to be able to eat that much and still be hungry makes no fucking physical sense.
