it's a status thing. In most parts of the world, historically speaking, most people of high status didn't spend as much time working out in the sun, meaning their skin would be naturally paler than the farmers, etc. who did.

If they're half black, I just consider them black. Even 1/4 black I just consider them black. If your grandparents look black, you're black.
They also consider themselves black. I've never seen a half black insist they are white as that would mean throwing away all kinds of favorable discrimination and DEI perks.

That's my confusion. I feel like at 25% or 50% you're just mixed race, leaning on being whatever the majority is.
And ordinarily I would agree. If someone was 75% white and 25% asian I'd say they were white. Or viceversa. But black I treat differently. I guess there's the reason why they had the "one drop rule". Blacks, phenotypically, just are so different from every other group. Their skin, their hair, their nose, their voice, their facial structure, their proclivities.
They also don't usually blend well with any other race.

But anything and black just seems to be black, and the kids always associates with their black side way more.
What you're talking about is cultural as an effort to for the Left to push racial nationalism. The one drop rule actually shows how silly it was because of an inverse of what we currently have.
People who were explicitly white in all but official Mississippi declaration, and were not visibly non-white, were required to allow themselves to be discriminated against. This is basically the whole point of why Homer Plessy sued. There is nothing particularly special about Africans that would make them "unable to blend well with any race". Particularly you bring up Arabs, which are more pre-disposed to violence, inbreeding, and tribalism, explicitly due to Islam.
There is nothing particularly different about their voices, skin, hair, nose, facial structure, proclivities, blood, organs, genetics, phenotypes, etc, that would make them sufficiently different from any other population of humans, including indigenous Americans or Pacific Islanders.
