Anyone able to recommend any good newer RPGs without any woke elements shoved in?
I made the mistake of buying Drova - Forsaken Kin without looking into it first thinking it was the perfect way to scratch the Gothic itch only to be greeted by Body Type 1 & 2 and a black celt/viking druid within the first minute.
The only other RPGs I've got my eyes on are Tainted Grail (still Early Access) and Skald (not liking the limited color scheme).
Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos was released in 2021. Is actually a mod on Gothic 2 but is a stand-alone RPG on a different island with some great improvements over 2. Highly recommend if you liked Gothic.
Tower of Time - great RPG with 0 woke. Same devs made Dark Envoy recently that has no woke either but it's not great. Can't recommend the second game.
Astlibra - no woke JRPG. Only thing I found that I hated was a mention of a god being non-gendered and referred as they rather then it or by name- to be honest I think it was a localization issue.
The dungeon of naheulbeuk - is a DND parody where you have a team of murder-hobos. Funny and 0 woke stuff, including sexy characters, dumb blond elf, male barbarian that is dumb but kicks ass.
+1 for Astlibra, the game is a labor of love that was in development for 15 years. Plenty of moments that would make lefties squirm, but more importantly it's one of the best action RPGs I've ever played. It has a demo as well, but skip the combat demo portion of it (overwhelming) and just start New Game.
Another vote for Astlibra. I cannot overstate my appreciation for that game. Easily the best thing I've played in years.
Not seeing a demo on Steam. Where can I find it?
It might not be attached to the main store page, but will show up when doing a steam store search for Astlibra.
Nope. Not for me. Can't go through steamdb either.
When I was in highschool in Québec, bunch of friends were fans of the MP3 adventures and songs. Amasing what a small team of France shitposters can do in a basement wtih some audio montage. The universe was good enough to warrant a game based on it.
The game is good. There is also a ''Dungeon Keeper'' Naheulbeuk game.
I had no idea there was a game made about Dungeon of Naheulbeuk. I'll definitely look into that.
The combat system is nice and they did put thought in encounters. For a parody type game it is surprisingly competent.
Already played Archolos. Waiting on the 2.0 update.
Tower of Time and Naheulbeuk look interesting but Astlibra's visual style isn't my cup of tea. Thanks for the suggestions.
If you are interesting I also recommend Enderal: Forgotten Stories - free on Steam but you need Skyrim to play it.
Technically a mod for Skyrim but it's a different system in a different world with a great story that is engaging. It's not as open world as Skyrim and you even have well written companions.
Only reason I didn't include it in my initial recommendation is that it's from 2019 and shockingly 2019 was 6 years ago.
Totally forgot Enderal. I installed it once at some point but never played it.
You just have to. It's now on my favorite game list. Good story, interesting characters, no woke as I remember. Only thing I didn't like was that half the guards are women and the mod that makes all guards male or female does not work.
It was the same in Skyrim and women/men are designed to be equal in most fantasy games since at least the 90s but it takes me out that a high mortality world would not prioritize having kids.
If it makes you feel any better there’s a deblackification mod for Drova at basedmod HQ.
I think the Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader is pretty good, I didn’t see any woke elements I’m not that far though.
Felvidek is based, medival Hungarian Jrpg set in a comedic world, it’s basically Berserk meets Monty Python and it’s awesome.
It might be stretching your definition of rpg but Withering Rooms is a rougulike sidescrolling horror rpg I found very enjoyable. Despite playing as a teenage girl in Victorian England there wasn’t really anything woke about it, there’s a side character late into the game who’s implied to be a homo but he doesn’t say it explicitly and it’s not really brought up much.
Already refunded it. But maybe I'll pirate it and use it with the mod. There is nothing I hate more than ethnic 'diversity' where it doesn't make any sense whatsoever and I refuse to support that bullshit. Create a game set in Africa and I'll happily play it but don't shove blacks into a setting where they don't belong. Or really any other ethnicity for that matter. I won't stand for white people in 10th century Japan either.
Rogue Trader, Felvidek and Withering Rooms do look interesting although Felvideks visual style might be a bit much for me. Thanks.
+1 for Rogue Trader. Even if you're not into the 40k lore, it has a lot of content, and it presents some interesting philosophical questions.
This is the way. No money for woke stuff. Torrent and mod the woke out if you still want to play it.
1+ to Felvidek
It was a mighty refreshing (but short) game with entertaining dialogue
Technically a remake, but Star Ocean: The Second Story R does not have anything woke inserted whatsoever.
It is a completely faithful full-blown remake, a new standard that all other remakes should be held to.
I gushed about its quality a year ago. Cannot recommend that game enough.
And it has a demo available. Gonna check it out. Thanks.
And it helps that its remaking one of the greatest JRPGs on the PS1, a game so good that the series is still limping on with not a single good game since but still able to coast on its heights.
Romancing Saga 2 Revenge of the Seven just came out recently. Its a remake but of an SNES game so its got at least a huge leap in graphics and functionality going for it.
I also didn't get hit by any wokeness that I recall, and was consistently surprised how heavy on the fanservice it went despite being a non-niche title. Just endless hot chicks of every variety and no fear of letting people be attracted to one another (you can lose an entire emperor to being a simp for a hot girl in the bar).
And because its a SNES game originally, its heavy on the gameplay side instead of getting bogged down in endless dialogue.
Japanese choose the weirdest names for their games. Unfortunately it uses Denuvo. That's a deal breaker for me.
I really recommend Horizon's Gate and Kingsvein. Indie RPGs with FFTactics style combat and class systems. Fun and addicting as hell.
I'll add Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Your basic anime/JRPG story, so nothing to write home about there, but a pretty good action combat system with fairly capable AI for the party members (can do multiplayer too though).
I will say, be prepared for a lot of grinding if you play it. It honestly feels like it was designed as a gacha game, but then they took a lot of the microtransaction and live service stuff out. So, instead it's grinding for random rolls from the chests if you want to get into the higher difficulty levels. And time-wise the story is maybe like 10-20% of it and the rest is random missions to get resources/xp/gold/etc.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn and Unicorn Overlord if not mentioned. Zenless Zone Zero if you want to step outside of a previous comfort zone.
I'm over 100 hours into Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and it's very fun, with great graphics and an interesting twist on classic turn-based JRPG combat. I've noticed virtually nothing woke, though I guess there could be something in the back half of the game (I've been grinding and doing sidequests). Definitely recommend.
What's your criteria for 'recent'? Most pre-2015 RPGs are good and relatively un-woke. As for new releases, I'll agree with Rogue Trader although I haven't gotten too far in it.
5-10 years. I have played or am already aware of most older RPGs. So I'm more interested in more recent gems. Especially RPGs with a compelling story/atmossphere.
I'll throw Kenshi into the mix then. Not a story-driven RPG, but it is quite a good sandbox RPG experience
Kenshi's a good time sucker and all but it's really stretching the minimum requirements of an RPG, it's way more of a weird sandbox/desert running sim.
It's also like 6 years old if you only count full release and over a decade old if you count early access.
Have you beded a space elf yet?
