Censorship is worse when they make it cringe.

People have always advocated for censorship. Always have and always will. The major thing now, is the censorious cretins aren't the Evangelical Right, an old, out-of-touch boomer movement completely external to the affected industry. Now they're the puritan left, a movement of young and old leftists coming from both in and outside the industry to consolidate and expand leftist power.
They never hated censorship due to some moral framework, they hated it because they weren't benefitting.
Always was. The ones who wanted to ban violent video games were Joe Lieberman, Hillary Clinton and Tipper Gore. All democrat leftists.
Not just violent games. They came fairly close to literally outlawing modding because of the "hot coffee" GTA mod.
It was always the leftoids.
I wonder if Bill Clinton ever played that doom mod where he's the main character
I'm going to shamefully steal a post from lyra833:
>I look at KiA
>people are once again posting "Satanic Panic" drivel
The PMRC, which is the group that pushed the narrative now known as the "Satanic Panic", was founded by Susan Baker (R) and Sally Nevius (R), and explicitly did not demand censorship of any media for its first two years. Instead, the main demand of this commission was to place PARENTAL ADVISORY stickers on any record that contained "foul language" or "explicit references to sex and violence". Not only did these stickers increase consumer choice/awareness, but they also boosted the sales of any record that sported them, a phenomenon known to the PMRC and publicly approved of in numerous press releases as evidence that "informed consumption of art does not harm free expression". The design of the sticker was specifically chosen to be striking and memorable, and a requirement by the PMRC was that it "not obscure the art on the cover".
The reason you remember the PMRC as a bunch of assholes was that it was taken over by Tipper Gore (D) who began using the name of an organization she did not found to send threatening letters to record executives and demanding that they censor the content of songs if they wanted to be sold in the US (sound familiar?) and then, on top of that, using her husband's (Al Gore, D) authority to summon numerous rock bands to testify before Congress, most notably Twisted Sister. After delivering an embarrassing 20-minute diatribe in favor of censorship, which was apparently so awful it caused numerous ranking committee members to walk out in protest, Gore immediately left the hearing before Twisted Sister was allowed to speak, leaving the two Republican founders of the group, Baker and Nevius, to sit on the receiving end of a nasty dressing-down by Frank Zappa against what Gore had said. Following the atrocious media response to her comments, Gore went on to denounce the PMRC for making those comments (lmao) and collaborate with Joe Libermann (D) and Herb Kohl (D) to try and censor video games.
To this end, she founded "parent activist groups" led by herself (D) and Liebermann (D), who strong-armed video game publishers into allowing "government input" on ESRB ratings to "prevent the spread of stereotypical or violent content".
The only right wing calls to censor video games at this time came from Jack Thompson, an ineffectual joke of a California appellate attorney who was most widely known for filing assault charges against Attorney General Janet Reno (D) for forcibly groping him him and saying he had a tiny penis. Reno went on to become the AG who did Waco. Thompson, for his trouble, was made fun of in GTA2 as "the man with no dick" before he was disbarred by California Governor Jerry Brown (D). Notably, neither Gore nor Liebermann were publicly named or shamed for their efforts to censor music or video games.
As for D&D, which is always brought up when lefties parrot lies about a "Satanic Panic", the most pronounced objection from the religious right came from a certified nut job named Jack Chick, who wrote a very poorly drawn comic about how it was a front for a network of witch covens. WOTC sent free sets to churches and told local game stores in the area to be ready to explain to Christian parents how the game was based on the works of Tolkien. At no point was D&D ever curtailed either in content or reach by the religious right. Ronald Reagan mentioned it in numerous speeches, positively.
Anyone saying that it was "the right" at any point in modern American history is either an idiot or a liar.
dig deeper into who’s bank rolling this shit and i’m sure you’ll find the same tiny hat crowd. i hardly think gore and lieberman actually care about this shit, they’re just being paid or coerced to
If you want to make the connection, you can stop at Lieberman, no digging required.
lieberman doesn’t have the shekels to bankroll this shit
My point was that if you want to find a tiny hat, Lieberman is one.
The most important part about this is that Dee Snider called Tipper Gore a pervert in front of her husband.
Shame he became a vast shill. I used to like him a great deal.
Wouldn't that have been TSR? WOTC didn't own AD&D til the mid-late 90s
I know it seems like they flipped at some point, but I would argue they’ve remained consistent.
The left hate all that is pure and good and traditional. That’s why they rallied against censorship in the 60’s and 70’s when they wanted to break the influence of church, tradition and marriage so they could poison the culture with immorality. Now that church, tradition and marriage are things people are moving back towards, they’re once again trying their damndest to undermine it, only difference is now they have their filthy commie hands on all the levers. They’re always in favour of things they benefit from, as you correctly pointed out.
But they’ve remained consistent. Consistently evil.
I still remember the constant treating of 1984 like it was a book for chuds as a defense for this sort of shit. Just makes me want to throw it back in their face by saying "WOW! this is literally a fallacy!" a la the Deboonker meme every time they start using slippery slope fallacy or something like that.
The fact that young people are the ones calling for censorship and authoritarianism is the thing that's throwing us all off.
The Left literally spent decades using the revolutionary youth to attack traditional structures, but once it became clear that they took over institutions, they then taught the youth to attack both young and old who were statists. Fundamentally the destroyed so many young people, and so many families, that they want the state to be their mommy and daddy. Even millennials grew up in a way where if we saw someone our age saying, "I DON'T FEEL SAFE" we'd laugh at them and call them a faggot.
Now, those people who did that are in charge of entire social, political, and economic structures; and have acquired the power of the gun. They basically combined with the statist crazy cat ladies who need the government to be their husband, and minorities to be their children. That's what happened with the Lockdowns during Covid.
We have this weird situation where a bunch of the young people thought 'risky behavior' was going on Reddit without their safety teddy bear. Then the government gave them a gun and told them to do whatever they felt like.
This is why I kind of hate millennials more than any generation.
They actually grew up in a really shit environment that had a small window of "not shit" that was the late 80's and early 90's. Yet instead of rising to the occasion and re-building what they had (which is literally us going "I just wanted to play video games"), they fell to the environment and became the most wild-eyed, psychotic, hyper-ideological, lunatic generation the country has ever seen. They became: "IF YOU DON'T WANT ME TO CUT YOUR KIDS DICK OFF, YOU'RE A NAZI AND I'LL KILL YOU". The millennials are where everything split. They either figured out that something went wrong, or they quadrupled down on the crazy. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are not split like this, and kinda just understand the millennials are not to be trusted.
Isn’t female gen z the wokest demographic of all time?
For their age? I don't think so, but I can't confirm
I know that basically each generation is peak Leftist around 18, and that Millennials had the highest percentage of Leftists of any generation. But to be clear, that's at at 18. It goes down as the generations age.
Gen Z and Alpha reversed that trend and had slightly fewer leftists at 18 than Millennials did.
I haven't seen a gender & age break down of those numbers, however.
Yes but gen z guys are much more based by contrast than Millennial men are. The gender divide in gen z is pretty extreme, especially in cities.
Who raised Millennials?
thinking
That's the only positive quality they have. Making based memes and throwing around based opinions is not a skill set. A lot of Zoomers are adults now, so the question is, what are they doing now to stem the tide?
They can only do so much as early adults. Unfortunately, most of the work is up to Gen Z and Millennials in positions of power.
JD Vance is a Millennial, so that's a pretty good start.
They never hated ____ due to some moral framework, they hated it because they weren't benefitting.
My new favorite quote
The biggest mistake Orwell made is underestimating just how much the oppression would be covered by many of those it oppresses
What the fuck is he holding in the upper left panel?
A motorized rubber mallet.
4Kids absolutely deserved all the mockery they got, but for One Piece most of all.
Didn't they also make Mr. Popo from DBZ blue? Think I remember that one...
Indeed that did. Funimation may not be a good company in any sense, but at least they did better with the series (Right down to an english translation of the original theme) than 4kids did, even if only in comparision.
It kills me that they made all these absurd changes to anime, but also made one of the more mature and violent Ninja Turtles series.
That answers my question but that's even more cringe.
Even more cringe, those two end up being friends.
I've died of cringe
"Who cares?!"
You do, because you went out of your way to censor the original material.
reminder the 4kids dub ends with the entire crew dying to a falling ship
Mercy kill.
Just tell them you prefer the Sailor moon Viz media dub, including how they made Haruka and Michiru cousins and watch the shitstorm unfold
Sort of off topic, but the One Piece censorship where quite honestly hilarious. Like, they weren't lazy about it. God, listen to the modified dialogue they did to Crocodile. Some of his taunts are borderline toddleresque. It's magnificent. Pretty sure he coined the phrase "desert doo-doo" at one point.
The thing about a lot of anime in those days is the censorship was genuinely often more creative, and even more memorable, to a point where its almost arguable that its good in its own way.
One Piece wasn't quite to that level, but ones like Yugioh are almost better with the wierd censored version (of the anime, not the cards themselves).
Was the concept of the "shadow realm" a form of censorship, or was that always a thing in the unrestricted versions? I always assumed it was just another way for them to say they fucking killed a guy playing a children's card game, but now I'm starting to wonder.
Its both. People were straight up killed often, but Yugi did use a power called "Mind Crush" all the time which basically was a the "shadow realm" thing anyway.
So like, original Kaiba had his soul literally sent to the Shadow Realm which left him in a coma until he "solved the puzzle of his heart" (which the Mind Crush shattered) and that's why he went from absurdly evil to kinda evil but obsessed with cards, and then after the second Mind Crush in the very first episode of the anime turn into just an anti-villain.
But then there was Arkana, who in the original just had saw blades come out if you lost that would chop off your legs and you'd bleed to death. The Dub changed it to magical shadow blades that would send your soul to the shadow realm.
So the concept was there, and Yugi in the "season 0" before Duel Monsters took over the show would alternate between outright killing the villains or shattering their mind depending on circumstance. So he did actually "send people to the shadow realm" in a way, but only some of the times.
So the dub instead turned all the try-hard grim and edgy killing and torture into instead over the top cringe wacky shit that was much more fitting for the concept of a card game anime. Which as an end result, makes for a much better watch imo.
Point being, censorship can at least not create irredeemably awful products if its still being done with soul and creativity. Its still not a good thing on principle, but we can still enjoy it.
I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of an "anti-villain." I'm familiar with "anti-hero" but never the villain variant. So like.. an anti-hero does good things with generally selfish intent, so an anti-villain would be.. uh.. he does bad things, but with the best intentions? That just sounds like a buffoon, but with a nicer spin on it. A Mr. Bean if you will.
Anti-hero is what I should have said, but I typed that up an hour where I wasn't fully awake and didn't catch that in a proofread. My bad.
Though if I had to I'd call an anti-villain someone who exists entirely to "punish the evil doers" An actual anti- to villains. He has no noble goals and doesn't care about the innocent or doing anything good, just hurting villains. That decouples it from being a foil to anti-hero, but it sounds better to me because that sounds like an interesting character.
I barely watch anime yet I’m 100% familiar with the “dub piece” rabbit hole 🕳️
We stopped bullying retarded faggots in school. That's how we got here.
